New Regent Street, Christchurch
First established in Christchurch during the depths of the 1930s Great Depression, New Regent Street is made up of pastel-hued shops in Spanish Mission style terraced architecture. It provided jobs when it was first built and it's now helping Christchurch recover again, this time as a fore-runner of inner-city regeneration. There is still evidence here of earthquake damage, with a few shops still boarded up, waiting for permission to re-occupy. This is such a familiar pattern of frustration for many all over Christchurch. Goodness only knows why these few shops haven't had the go-ahead.
This is such a fascinating place to visit, and many people will enjoy it, both locals and visitors alike. It's a must do!
