We recently returned home after our 11th trip to Cuba although it was our first time at Playa Pesquero. We were looking for a relaxing beach holiday and the hotel certainly delivered. We were in Building 17, close to the main lobby, buffets, pool and only a short walk to the beach. The maid, Maria Luisa kept our room spotlessly clean. The room is in desperate need of upgrading. The bed was hard and creaked with even small movements, the wall sockets were so loose they had difficulty holding the plug, and the toilet was not securely fastened and banged every time you sat down or stood up. On the plus side the air conditioning worked well and there was always plenty of hot water.
I’m sure that the beach is one of the reasons that people return to this resort. It is beautiful. Chairs are not difficult to find, although shade either under a palapa or a tree is at a premium. Guys at the beach collect the chairs every night and then set them up for you when arrive in the morning. By 9:00 am all the good spots in the shade are gone. The same situation occurs at the pool. By 8:00 am all the good shade spots around the pool are taken. I hated to play the towel game but on our way to breakfast we “reserved” our spot. What is most annoying is seeing chairs with towels on them and no one showing up for hours. In fact one day, no one arrived all day. Towel exchange closes promptly at 5 so if you don’t want to cart a wet towel back to your room overnight you need to watch the time.
We certainly knew what to expect food wise and were pleasantly surprised by the variety of food. It does pay to be at the buffets as soon as they open or you will be in a line up as once the tables have been used they are not quickly reset. We ate breakfast at the smaller Criolla buffet as it was less busy and quieter but preferred the Latino for dinner as it had more variety. The lady making the salads to order was excellent. We tried 4 ala carts, Caletones (seafood), Gondola (Italian), Caribeno (Caribbean) and the Romantico. All were very good especially the lobster. Despite what other reviewers have said the orange juice is not fresh squeezed. The only thing I found missing was thick yogurt. There was a pourable type in pitchers and a drinkable type in bottles. There is a lady making smoothies, they are ok, but made with powdered milk.
Hotel lobby is the best of any hotel we have been to in Cuba. Excellent bar and service, lots of tables and chairs, coffee bar with great cappuccinos and entertainment after dinner every evening. It is a great place to sit and have a drink, play a game of cards, meet with friends or just people watch! There are a lot of smokers and although there is a non-smoking section it surrounded by the smoking section so it is difficult to avoid smoke.
We toured the new premium section and could have upgraded to it for $90CUC ($125 CAN) a night. We did not think it was worth the price. It was too quiet for us, far from the amenities of the main hotel and far from the nicest part of the beach.
Other highlights, guava and mango ice cream and 11 year old aged rum.
Just an observation not a criticism. The Cuba tourism industry in putting money into building new hotels and adding premium or deluxe sections to existing hotels but there does not seem to be money to maintain and repair existing facilities. Playa Pesquero is in need of refurbishment, repairs and replacements in many areas. The Holguin airport is also really showing its age. It needs serious repairs to air conditioning, washrooms, escalator and seating. It will be very interesting to follow the growth of tourism in Cuba over the next decade. Travel while there is a still Autentico Cuba!

Just returned from Playa Pesquaro - excellent holiday. Food in the a la carte restaurants very good. Did not much like the buffet but perhaps just me I prefer to be served with food. Choice was very good. The beach beautiful and pools fabulous. The Cuban people are so very nice (every one that we met). Took the Thomas cook trips to Holguin and Catamaran Paradise Island, both trips excellent especially Catamaran island where you were also given bottle of rum to take away. Drinks in hotel excellent and flowing. Cuban day with the roasted pig is somewhat of an experience - a good one. Not much in the vicinity of the hotel other than a few shops and market (train ride away) but enough to keep you occupied in the hotel with archery, Spanish lessons, dancing, volleyball, football etc etc . Evening shows didn't really see many but got the impression from others that they were not really upto much. Loved the tapas bar and ice cream parlour. One thing was not happy with was the reserving of sunbeds on the beach mainly (but also round the pool although this was not a problem). On the beach most people had reserved their shade and sunbeds to the point of the chap telling people to reserve beds in the shade and out the shade, subsequently it was a pain trying to find a space. This really needs to be dealt with by the hotel as it seriously offends so many people. Loved Romantica and the seafood restaurant and the Bistro, all in all a fabulous holiday. Had normal room which was very large but basic. Just another downfall the beds on the beach are so uncomfortable!!

So, what's the population of Canada, can't be many, there're all here!
Cracking break again at Playa Pesquero, this was our second visit, didn't disappoint again. The hotel is spacious, the staff are lovely, the pool and beach are both stunning and the food is OK.
Arrived after being awake for about 20 hours and had to queue for over half an hour to check in, not good, especially when we checked in on the transfer coach last year, all we had to do was show our passports at reception and pick our keys up, so much easier.
Had our wedding anniversary again whilst there, had a word with hospitality and had a table on the beach at the seafood restaurant sorted, ate lobster, and had a cake sorted on the night, absolutely brilliant, lovely touch.
Reading some earlier reviews, I agree that this year there has been some changes and cut backs, just little things that were there last year that weren't this but didn't make a difference really, just did different things.
As well as the everything the hotel has to offer, one of the advantages of Cuba is it seems to attract really nice people. No drunks or idiots just pleasant guests, a lot of English but LOADS of Canadians, got chatting to people from every corner of Canada, great people, and there's no Americans ( win-win!), fingers crossed it will stay that way.
Will we back back? Yep, probably in a couple of years. Would I recommend it? Definitely, not at lot there, can see kids getting bored, but if you're looking for a Caribean holiday that's quiet, crime and drug free, good food, beautiful beach, it's a must.

This is a large resort with a lot of space and a lot of people, but it had a village feel to it and you had the choice of loud, busy areas or quieter places if you sought them out. We eat healthily = lobster, grilled fish, seafood, steak, ribs, salad, champagne, wine and beer but there were plenty of junk food options including crepes, hamburgers, wieners, fries, cakes, sweets and cocktails that most people went for. The entertainment was ok but the water ballet was exceptional - don't miss it. Not quite all inclusive since the 80%+ Canadian clientele insist on tipping anything that moves, so budget on an extra 5 dollars/pesos/euros a day for tips. Snorkeling was ok but not exceptional. Good value, easy living.

Room tip: Rooms further from the centre are a long walk but quieter.

We stayed at Playa Pesquero in the second week of February. The resort was very good. We stayed at building 45 which was conveniently located next to pools and the buffet. The room was nice and clean. In the last two days of our stay we had an issue with the shower, the water was not warm enough.
The food was not great but it was OK. I found the buffet to be better than most of the restaurants. Freshly squeezed orange juice for breakfast was my favourite!
I liked that the resort offered free of charge non-motorized boating activities. The kids club was very good too, my kids could not wait to go there every day!
The beach was beautiful. The water in the swimming pool was a bit cold but the ocean was just perfect.
The entertainment shows at night were pretty good.
Overall I would highly recommend this hotel.
