This little gem in the middle of Lake Trasimeno is really with a visit if you're spending days in this wonderful part of Italy.

Get the small ferry from either Castiglione or Possignano and spend time aboard to settle down in tempo, because once on the Maggiore you will find yourself spun out of time and into the past.

Go to the top and visit the original church where the holy Francis of Assisi used to come to quite meditation, way from the hustle of Assisi. The locals charge a small fee for entrance and the backstory - an it's really worth it. you can still trace the development in catholic fresca painting dating all the way back to the original church. At it's height this little island held eight churches (!)

The island also house a couple of restaurants and they are both quite alright - but of course they know to charge you for being caught on the island until the next ferry. You properly won't mind, it's a wonderful afternoon.

A perfect spot for meditation. It offers walking trails across the island, surrounded by olive tree, and nice panoramic spots to look over the lake and surroundings.

First visited this little island 18 years ago on honeymoon so took our kids back for old times sake.

They were desperate to swim and for this reason we were disappointed. We had enquired and believed there was a stony beach access which there was but it was dirty with no running water.

Glad we went for the boat trip and the experience of another side of Italy but were keen to get back to a clean pool!

We went on what was written place where they made lace, grand house and so on. Massive disappointment. When you arrive by boat your immediately hit by market stalls selling tat you could buy in any market all over the world. The main event the house was closed which meant the best part of half the island was closed to the public. So apart from revolting toilets and tat there is nothing else there. You would be better of going on party boat or something around the island and back to land. Couldn't even say much for.the scenery as most was obscured and overgrown so you saw trees and the path you were on. You could see it all in ten mins get some pics and your off

This small island is well worth a short visit to enjoy its tranquil environment and the ubiquitous gelato.
Be careful. We were late getting to the ferry and with great aplomb the ticket seller sold me two unlimited travel tickets for €25 instead of two return tickets at €15. Not a lot of money but it was annoying.
