Recommended by a local from the town, we came to Al Dolcenero for dinner and were more than happy. The food was amazing and had typical San Daniele prosciutto.
The decor in the restaurant is quirky, very modern with antique items of machinery dotted around, interesting and unexpected.
A group of 12 of us visited the restaurant on a Monday evening and decided it would be easier to have the tasting menu rather than individual dishes. We weren't disappointed! Bread and breadsticks were served in brown paper bags (nice touch) then the sharing platters started arriving - pickled vegetables, the perfect famous prosciutto di San Daniele (of various ages), more cold meats, cheeses served with honey and pear chutney, mortadella - too many things to list! Impossible to pick a favourite, everything was delicious. The desserts were really good too.
Staff were all friendly, service was polite, unobtrusive, and nicely paced.
I can't comment on whether this is the best restaurant in San Daniele as i haven't tried any others but I would certainly strongly recommend Al Dolcenero.
This, of course, in my not so humble opinion. You can see that I have reviewed restaurants all over the world and that I love good food. And maybe here in Friuli, for all I know, it is traditional to overpower a dish with oregano. But for me it is disgusting and I could not eat the spaghetti that supposedly had a main ingredient of anchovie and then tomato and then olives and then capers and then oregano. I tasted no anchovy whatsoever. Oregano was by far the main ingredient. The 36 month old prosciutto was excellent but no better than the 18-month-old prosciutto we had at three other places here. The green salad was acceptable. I ordered a half liter of wine and they brought me a quarter liter.
We called it quits and left. Hope you have better luck. The portions are large if that is important to you.
Thank you so much for tasty food! I come back to Al Dolcenero second year! Fresh and tasty food, stuff is friendly, kind and professional ! The most nice surprise was, that I could have contact with kitchen chief and he can explained about Italy food traditions!
