The Kollam Beach aka The Mahatma Gandhi Beach is approximately 850 meters long with golden sands that is a pleasure to walk on barefoot.
The beach is patrolled by lifeguards during the Weekends when there is a heavy rush of sightseers and families.
Cleanliness needs to be strictly adhered to if the beach has to live up to its name. The Kollam Corporation should implement a small entry fee to offset expenses in maintaining the beach.
This beach is a gift of nature and it should not be destroyed. Visitors can also enjoy the view from the park nearby or from the Beach Hotel which has a bar.
Small stalls and food courts dot the premises and brisk sales are carried out.
Littering is rampant and it's tough to control the litter bugs who have no qualms in throwing trash everywhere, as if it's not their problem. A classic example of 'killing the golden goose' for its egg.
An early morning walk down the beach devoid of the crowd is a rejuvenating experience.
Nature has gifted a wonderful beach to Kollam but if not managed prudently it's going to be washed away....by greed and ignorance.
