To us it seemed bigger in person than it sounded or looked like in pictures. There are just so many crosses! It was fascinating to wander the little trails around and through the hill and try to get a sense of just how many crosses there are.

In its current format, it apparently only exists since 1984 - though it goes back much, much longer! The Russians didn't like it as it was a symbol of Lithuanian nationalism as much as a religious site, and bulldozed it every so often. Since the Ruskies were booted out in 1990, the site has grown back and - regardless of your religious persuasion- it is truly an astonishing site.
Most people go there by car or organised tour, since it is in the middle of nowhere. However, you can get there by public bus + a good walk from the nearest town of Siauliai. A must see place if you are anywhere in the Baltic region.

As you walk up to the hill you are greeted by thousands of crosses of all kinds of shapes and sizes and different reasons why they have been left - religious, memorial and just because you can. It is completely overwhelming and not at all what I expected. There is a faint tinkling from all of the rosary beads hanging on the crosses and twinkling in the sun from the metal.

Unique place. But hard enough to reach it. Buses doesnt go often. And anyway you have to walk more than 2km one way. I recommend you to take a hill of crosses guided tour on fb.
