We have only been at this hotel for one full day but I feel compelled to write a review in case anyone is thinking of booking.

Firstly none of my concerns about arriving on the island and the testing procedures were realised. The airport was so well organised and we were through and waiting for our taxi transfer within the hour, including testing.

We checked in to the hotel around 5pm and received the negative test results early next morning meaning that we were free to go on to the beach and out and about.

The Sugar Bay Hotel has exceeded our expectations. The staff are friendly and helpful, everywhere is spotless and the Covid regimes put in place are robust. The food is fantastic, rooms lovely and have lots of extras including a fridge, safe, iron, hairdryer and White Stuff toiletries. The beach is literally a couple of steps away with a very sheltered cove. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.

We haven’t had time to experience everything that the hotel and island have to offer, but can’t wait to do so ☀️

We spent 10-days in August and had a lovely time. A few comments on hotel facilities-

Restaurant/Entertainment: you can only book for UMI and Sizzler once each per week. Colin’s bar serves fairly basic food, so the buffet was the more interesting option. The food was of very good quality and there was enough variety. Evening entertainment was also of excellent quality but was very loud (too loud to have a conversation during your dinner). The only place to go if you want a quiet meal was Sizzler (which you can only go to once per week unless you pay a supplement) or your room. Lazy Mongoose was closed the entire time we were there.
I have to express a special THANK YOU to Paul and his team who were super helpful in talking us through the food options at every meal to cater for my son’s nut allergy.

Pool - didn’t get to use it. All the loungers were taken each and every day, even at 7am!

Beach - really good set up with plenty of loungers and umbrellas available on request (although you may have to wait a bit since they only seemed to have 1 staff doing all the beach work). They have a good selection of non-motorised water sport equipment. As mentioned in the other reviews, the beach could do with a daily clean to remove old food/drinks and general litter. The sand can also do with a daily rake to remove debris. There was a lot of seaweed when we were there which harboured a lot of biting sandflies. I wish they had more organised activities for the kids/teens (beach volleyball, cricket etc).

Gym - very basic but sufficient. Lots of very heavy weights, but non-existent ones below 15kg. They had some yoga classes during our visit.

Barbados entry /exit - in comparison with other reviews, our airport experience was really straightforward. We did the required paperwork and BIMsafe app, so we had limited queueing at the airport (including testing). We also did our departure rapid antigen test at Garfield Sobers gymnasium. We arrived at around 10am and queued/waited for results in 2-hours, although we found out afterwards that it is better to go in the afternoon when there are shorter queues.

Room tip: The 1-br suite we had didn’t provide much privacy from the kids staying in the living room as it had wooden slats as dividing door.

This could be such a lovely hotel but there are a lot of niggly problems that need resolving first.

The welcome with the rum punch was good and most of the staff were amazing and helpful. The food was really good. Great Executive Chef and Andrea the "egg queen". A good choice of food and served hot.

The hotel is not described correctly and does not have 6 restaurants only 4 and the Blush Cafe is not part of the all-inclusive.

The bar is a joke. Very slow service and you may have to wait up to 30 minutes to get a drink. The chardonnay and fruit juices run out by mid-day, the syrups for the cocktails run out in the afternoon (and we had to wait a week for them to replace the strawberry one). In the evening a lot of the alcoholic drinks have run out. This is supposed to be a premium all inclusive. It is a big joke! If you want a pre-made rum or fruit punch this is what you will be served when the drinks run out! Even when they did get the cocktail syrup in some of the bar staff were unable to make a proper cocktail and it was just weak and watery. The bar closes at 2200 hours and there is no food or drink option after that until 0700am. There are fridges in the room but these are not stocked with drinks just water. When you asked for the drinks as they had cans and bottles at the bar they said that they were not able to give them out due to a shortage of these as well and the bar would run out of drinks even earlier than it already did.

The rooms are comfortable but have three problems. The safe doesn't work, there is no hot water and the sinks are blocked. We were upgraded after complaining but the new room had the same three problems. The sink and the hot water were not resolved before we left.

The pool is very shallow and has steps in it (instead of a ramp) which are quite dangerous and people did trip and fall over these. It is dirty and during my stay 9 children suffered ear infections. These resulted in expensive doctor bills. Don’t forget to set your alarm for 0400 am so that you can reserve your sun lounger by the pool. There are not very many of them!

The glass tables outside were not cleaned for a week instead of after every guest. At the weekend they have all the locals come to the hotel but do not employ extra staff to serve them. The management blame all the problems on covid but this is a lazy attitude to avoid cleaning. It seems they are just interested in packing people in and not being able to serve them and not having the drinks stocked up!

The beach was not cleaned and was full of seaweed, rotting seaweed, bugs and broken glass. The staff attitude was if you don't like it use one of the other hotel's beaches as they clean them but they are quite a walk away from the hotel. The hotel stinks of the rotting seaweed throughout.

There is no daytime entertainment as advertised and no animation team. The evening entertainment is occasional and at the weekends there was nothing on Friday or Sunday evening not even any music. Very boring indeed!

All in all don’t waste your money. You are not getting what you have paid for. A big disappointment!

The whole property needs a good clean. The tables at breakfast are set up straight away for lunch so covered in pigeons who leave “presents” on the table for your to find when seated at lunch. The tables are t cleaned properly and have a sticky film on the glass tops all the time.
The cat is really dirty and looks like it hasn’t been cleaned in months.

Attitude of staff
Staff lie to you if they don’t know an answer, rather than saying they don’t know. None of them gave the same answer to the same question asked by 3 different people from our party. I was told to “google it” when I asked what time the on site shop opened.

Every shortcoming is blamed on covid. The manager blames closure of bars on being short staffed as they are waiting on vaccines, but stated on Facebook in February that he and his staff had all been vaccinated.

The website states 6 bars. 2 are closed, one looks like it’s been closed for 2 years. Another is a coffee machine on a cart. The website states this is self service with a selection of coffees and sweet treats such as cookies and brownies.
One plate of cookies and scones arrives at 4pm and everything has gone by 4:09

All inclusive
This resort is not all inclusive in that you don’t pay for the meals, you cannot get a drink or something to eat at all times of the day. Bars close at 930 or 10.. no fixed time.
Children aren’t catered for well, there is no kids choice to speak of, other than Fish fingers at sizzle or chicken nuggets at umi, that you can only go to once.

This isn’t a 4* hotel. It would be pushing 2 in comparison to others in the Caribbean. This is part of their issue.. “you are in Barbados” was the response.. yes, we are, but we could have been in Majorca in a £400 resort, but instead we spent £4000 for the same choice, service and amenities.

When you have worked hard for the year and then want to relax and spend time with the family what a fantastic hotel to do that. We had the most amazing stay and some of the following people made it extra special. (Paul executive chef, Pedro Toppin, Maggie, Lasonta, Erleen, Latina, Megan, Nicole, Shaq, Arden, Tamika, Dylan, Romaine, Helen, Derek, Damien, Kathy-Anne and so many others.
