Find the road that takes you to the very top, where the trucks in the pit look like ants. Think of the sculptures and beauty mined here. Fill your mind with every great artist whose work began with this stone and you'll believe in God.

This is a trip up to a marble quarry (we didn't get taken to any caves). You are driven up on very twisty tracks to the site, high on the mountain, where quarrying takes place. The guide explains to you how marble is cut and moved, the different types of marble, the cost etc. It is a fascinating insight into this industry. The trip last for about 30 minutes. It was very hot on the day we visited (35C) - it was just as hot up the mountain (no breeze). Wear suitable footwear - you don't have to clamber around on rocks but it is very dusty (white marble dust) so your shoes will be covered!

My husband is a geologist and so it was on his "bucket list" of things to do. We arrived just minutes before the next tour left. Hopped in the 4x4 and off we went. Our tour guide was young and had only been working there for three weeks so she knew only the basics so my husband offered an "insiders" guide to how marble was formed, how it is cut etc, etc. Everyone was enthralled (including the guide) and gave him a round of applause when we finished. That being said, the view from the top of the mountain is jaw droppingly beautiful! Seeing the marble still inside the mountain - a sight to behold. A wonderful half hour trip that will stay in both of our memories.
