Wow wow wow, such a stunning place to visit. To be totally honest, its hard yakka for an unfit person, but determination won, was about 2.25 hour walk up there, with photo stops and unfitness, but just on an hour back to car park, mostly down hill going home. The most spectacular scenery going both ways.

I was stunned by the view of the gorgeous mountains along the road leading to the Hooker Valley Track and was even more amazed when I got there. The mountains were the symbols of the greatness of nature. The surroundings made me feel humble and realise how small human beings are. It was snowing the night before I arrived so the mountains were covered with snow, making it even more beautiful. Along the way, there was a memorial for those who lost their lives in the mountain. It was worth a climb as you could enjoy the view as well as take some time to remember those who perished in the mountains.

The walk was easy, relatively flat and even with a bit of rain it was spectacular. The scenery at both ends was amazing!! Would do it again in a heartbeat and way better than some of the other “tours” you can pay for.

We did the Hooker Valley Track as a family of four with two kids aged 9 and 11. Fairly flat trail so not a lot of uphill or steps. Good for families. It's a 10km track there and back and well worthwhile to see the amazing iceberg lake at the end of the trail. You cross three swing bridges on the way which have beautiful views. Lots of beautiful views of the mountains along the track. Most reviews say to allow 2-3 hours to complete this walk. We are all fairly fit and the whole family does long distance running and triathlons but with the amount of photo stops we had (plus about a 20 minute picnic at the lake) we ended up taking the full three hours. This is a very busy track and there is a constant stream of people going both ways. Sometimes it is hard to get past the people with hiking poles as they take up the whole path (we tended to be quicker so often found ourselves unable to get past on the boardwalk parts and were stuck behind people for large portions). When we were walking freely we travelled at a good pace but I’d say allow 3 ½ hours for most families, inexperienced hikers, those that aren’t particularly physically fit or if you are hiking at one of the busier times of day (which I think is all day except the early morning!).

Take water, a small snack if hiking with children and wear sunscreen and decent closed in shoes. Joggers or hiking boots are fine. You have mobile phone reception for most of the track. We even video called home to Australia from the iceberg lake! Wear sunscreen during the mid part of the day. We walked in the late afternoon and the sunset over Aoraki was stunning. If hiking in the morning or afternoon wear layers - we didn't need windproof jackets outbound but we definitely needed them on the return journey as evening fell.

Well worth the effort – try to do it early morning if it fits your schedule as it may be a bit quieter.

This is a very easy, flat 1/2 day walk. Total elevation is 80m so is pretty much flat.
You have 3 suspension bridges to cross and the views from the bridges are great.
There are scenic boardwalk sections and easy tramping on gravel. This walk is easy for young families and I even saw some carrying their babies the entire way.
The DOC keep this track in excellent condition and the view and scenery at the end is something to see.
The Hooker Valley Lake had icebergs floating very close to shore when we visited and the photographic opportunity is excellent.
