Truly a great place to stay when visiting Tuscany..At arrival, the woman that checked us in was very snippy and curt..when we left 3 days later, the same woman and the same attitude..The rest of the time the staff was very fun and courteous and the experience was very memorable in a positive way..
Dining is great , though sometimes rushed ( in the wine cellar) and slow( in the fine dining..
The bar was great fun, but needs to turn the bright neon like lights down for some ambiance..
Be sure to try the pools for some relaxation...
A very fine hotel...

We had five nights in this beautiful renovated monastery close to Siena and the delights of 'Chiantishire'. The buildings have been tastefully adapted to their new purpose and new buildings added in sympathetic style to provide all the amenities you would expect from a five star retreat. The service is excellent and our superior room overlooking the courtyard with views to the surrounding countryside was big, well-appointed and oozing period charm. The bathroom and shower room were particularly good.
Breakfast was served in the courtyard and was up to scratch without being amazing. Lunch is available in the Tuscan restaurant or outside it and evening meals in the same location (a converted wine cellar) or in the Gordon Ramsey sponsored fine dining room. Although good, the menus in both locations don't change from day to day and become a bit repetitive after a couple of days. You are very much a captive audience here (unless you want to drive out to Siena or nearby towns) so a longer stay than ours would be a bit restrictive food-wise.
The location of the hotel is ideal for walking and cycling or driving relatively short distances to key sights such as Siena (30 minutes), Florence (60 minutes) and San Girminigano (60 minutes). Pisa is about an hour and a half drive. A car is essential.

Room Tip: Overlooking courtyard with views to countryside.

Castel Monastero is a beautiful Tuscan property. It is like staying in a piece of living history. Our room was large and modern while retaining its rustic charm, exposed wooden beams and all. The bathroom was a good size with both a shower and bathtub, and you felt like you had space unlike many European hotels. The shampoos and conditioners were also paraben-free, which is so incredibly rare. This may not seem like a big thing, but after staying in almost a dozen hotels over a few weeks, it's nice to finally find one that cares about the quality of its toiletries. Sometimes it's these small details that set one hotel apart from the rest. Castel Monastero had it all--with nothing overlooked.

Hotel staff and reception were exceptionally nice, and we were greeted with kindness and professionalism. The indoor salt water pool was calming and relaxing, and the jacuzzi was stunning--it was like you were in a large luxury cave somewhere in paradise. We dined in the evening at the hotel's restaurant La Cantina, which was set in a medieval wine cellar with high vaulted ceilings and stone walls. Dinner was fifteen dishes over four courses with wine pairings; the local beef tagliata was perfectly cooked and amazing.

The only two minor things that could have made our stay perfect--the breakfast was good but could have offered more selection, and I only wish that when I asked the welcoming staff member about the history of the hotel, when it was built and etc., that she knew something about it. These minor things did not affect our stay in the least, and we can easily say this was one of our favourite stays after being at so many hotels on our trip.

We will most definitely return to the Castel Monastero.

Spent two nights here on our honeymoon. A gorgeous converted monastery in the Tuscan countryside. Beautiful triple tier pools. Stunning castle to wander through. The only quibble we had was with the dinner we had at the hotel's restaurant. We waited over 45 minutes to get our entrees and the tables next to us had the same issue. This wouldn't keep me from recommending the place, but it was surprising -- and the staff & manager didn't seem to care at all. Compared with other high end hotels, this one needs to pick it's game up a little bit. FYI -- the buffet breakfast is underwhelming as well.

We arrived and were welcomed graciously. Our room was beautiful. The setting was unbelievable and the food was yummy. To me though, the people make the place and every person went out of there way to make the visit memorable. We wanted to do a biking day - they organized a private guide that could show us things and take us on roads that we would never of found. We hiked both around the property and on the trails nearby. The gym sits on the balcony of the spa - the breeze while running on the treadmill was spectacular. The food both the Gordon Ramzy restaurant and the more casual restaurant in the cave met all expectations. We feel blessed to have experienced this slice of heaven. Thank you to Enzo and his entire staff for what you do. We will be sad to leave tomorrow.
