We spent a romantic weekend here and had a beautiful superior suite with a nice bath and ethanol fire place. Nice nature around to have nice walks or boat and canoe trips in Spreewald, in case of suitable weather conditions, which we did not have. Food in restaurant is alright but not as nice as we had hoped from what rest of location was like in quality. Service was great though.
Pros: lovely location, excellent rooms, great breakfast buffet, romantic setting and you really have the feeling of being "away".
Cons: service in the restaurant (we had dinner) is not good, and the dining room could do with a modern face lift. The rooms and the dining area do not match whatsoever. The rooms have the perfect blend of old & new, the dining area is simply stuffy. No phone/ internet reception in the room (this can also be a plus, depending on what you're looking for!). Hotel is very difficult to reach with public transport, you will need to invest in a taxi ride (20 EUR each way).
We took a family appartment with Sauna and it is very very nice. Very autenthic, spacious and very comfortable. Beautiful ""beer" garden and sorroundings outside.... you could spend a whole day there,,,,,,, for breakfast, try homemade marmelade, mjami.
We were looking for an extended weekend getaway for the family to discover the Spreewald. AFter quite some research on the web, we found the Spreewaldbrauerei (whose hotel is confusingly called "Grüner Strand der Spree". Convincing: Gorgeous fancy restaurant right next to very authentic and cozy pub with the copper brewing vats gleaming. Food in the pub great, good basic German fare, they often have live jazz bands at the weekends. Add to that the old, carefully renovated and restored buildings housing the hotel rooms, a seemingly endless garden with waterways, meadows and a beergarden (plus a treehouse, very quirky), and you have a gorgeous holiday accommodation retreat. I won't go into the region Spreewald here, it was a good starting point for discovering this region, though.
Downsides? Not many. We had a maisonette room and the kids slept in the downstairs pull-out sofa which wasn't very good but is apparently being replaced in the coming months. The view from our room was stunning out the back (#36 to get that view), but the side view (and only view for the other maisonettes) was out onto the gravel car park :-( and what they say is a popular drinking spot with barbeque in the summer months. Maybe not so idyllic if you are looking for quiet. The staff were all very friendly and professional (also quite rare in these parts). Hotel rooms and restaurants furnished with solid wood furniture and antiques.
