This old temple with a one of its kind atmalinga is a spiritual delight. The temple is 1500 years old and right in the middle of Gokarna. Ask anyone and you will reach here. Must visit...

I was forced to take the puja ticket for enabling me to touch the atma lingam. But it is not like that. Every one who enters the temple in the morning hours are permitted to touch. If you pay the pujari some amount, you can touch for 1-2 minites or else it will be less.

Shiva temple in Gokarna one of the famous one. Men's are basically allowed without upper cloth. You basically see the God from upside to down. There are some history linked to ravana brought this from Kailash.

Mahabaleshwara Temple, Gokana is considered as a holy and very important religious
place for Hindus. Nearby is Gokarna beach and devotees take a bath in this Arabian sea.
The Siva Linga here is called Athmalinga that was brought by Ravana from Mount Kailash and was perforce placed at Gokarna as per legend.
Usual Siva Linga is not seen here , instead the pedestal has a small hole at its centre from where one can see the top of the Athmalinga. There is perennial water around the Linga. The priest removes some water and allows a devotee to see the top
of the linga and touch it. Great! The shape of the linga in its entirety can be seen on a stone behind the linga. we had the darshan twice in the evening and again the next day morning when we performed Gold Nagabharana special pooja. If one wish to have good and peaceful darshan avoid festive days and week ends. Evening and early mornings may be less crowded.
The rate list is displayed at the booking counter and a devotee can chose a pooja that he wishes and on payment a purohit is entrusted/attached to you to do the pooja. or you may chose a purohit who is entrusted with the work His name is printed on the receipt. The rates are inclusive of required materials and dakshina. Ofcourse the purohit expects a little more which you may fix in the beginning if you select one.
There is no exploitation. it is for you to chose the puja .
Temple timings : from 6.00 am to 12.30 noon and again from 5 pm to 8.30 pm
Free annaprasada available from 12 noon to 2 pm and from 7.30 to 8.30 pm in the hall nearby. Dress code for men without shirt and banian. Mobiles may be taken but to be switched off. No photography inside the temple.

Very nice temple, it has a very long history right back to the Ramayana. The temple is maintained very clean & disciplined. There is something spiritual in the atmosphere of temple. Even they offer Prasad Bhojan for everyone. The nighttime makes it very beautiful.
