Normally we dine at The Glen shopping centre when in the area, but today we decided to try Airsteam Cafe for lunch.

It is located in the Century Walk entertainment and cinema complex, which shares its building with the Novotel Glen Waverley.

The cafe has a slight air travel theme (hence its name), with a row of clocks on the wall near the front showing the time of day in cities around the world. There is also a bar with a huge selection of drinks available.

The wood fired pizza was amazing. We ordered the "Spartan" which has Greek-style toppings. The lamb on it was perfect - so tender, melt in the mouth. I think they must have stewed the lamb first and then put it on the pizza. The base was excellent and browned perfectly, with some air bubbles to give the thin base some fluffiness, and the combination of toppings was perfect.

In my book, a good pizza uses minimal cheese, as it should purely help bind the ingredients to the base and highlight the quality ingredients, not drown everything in a layer of fat to disguise the toppings. This pizza hit the mark perfectly, and included a few crumblings of feta cheese to complement the Greek theme of it. The tzatziki sauce was nice, and I'm so glad they simply put a dollop of it in the centre of the pizza, so you could spread whatever amount you wanted on the slices you wanted.

When it comes to pizzas, I hate the rubbish that is churned out from Dominos, La Porchetta, and so many cheap pizza shops on the street. This pizza ranks as one of the best I've had. Yes, it's not cheap (at around the $20 mark), but worth every cent.

We also had one of the specials of the day which was the hokkien noodles with lamb stir fry. We asked for no added salt (as some Asian dishes tend to be overly salty), and our request was accommodated, with the stir fry perfectly done to our taste.

The service was prompt and pleasant, with the staff very friendly. We were asked during the meal and also when paying how everything was.

Normally you don't associate cafes of this style with amazing gourmet pizza, but Airstream Cafe surprised us, guaranteeing that we will be back to try some of their other options.

This is Melbourne's best kept secret when it comes to wood-fired gourmet pizza!

If you don't know what cuisine you feel like, this is the place for you. You can get most types- Asian, Greek, modern Australian, Italian... I went with the salmon and it was well cooked and had great flavoured accompaniments- although maybe not as filling as I'd hoped. My cousin had the lamb souva, she was happy, I tried some and didn't love the flavour and the flat bread wasn't well done.
Dessert displays cater to most people and it's a big space so lots of people can fit.
Cheap enough, simple service but a good option for variety and convenience.
