Before we went to the cathedral and castle we first strolled around Rochester and had a coffee stop at the Deaf cat. We had a large cappucino and coke. On the side we had a lemon meringue muffin, coffee&walnut cake and chocolat brownie. All delicious.

Always my "go to" coffee shop when visiting Rochester. Sandwich style lunch also available, including toasties.

In the very core of Rochester, Kent, in the United Kingdom, this cosy café invites customers to treat themselves to a delightful experience. Great atmosphere, mouth-watering bites and, needless to say, excellent coffee. The coffee display is not as varied as in larger stores; however, this is, essentially, the magic of Deaf Cat Coffee: great quality coffee and an amazing overall experience in each visit.
As a poster behind the door reads, "Charles Dickens never visited a Costa Coffee". So, why not just take the chance to "Keep the tradition alive"?

"The music is too loud in there" This review from my Dad is one of the reasons I like Deaf Cat so much. The coffee is absolutely the best in Rochester, and the atmosphere makes it even better.

I’m a resident of Rochester and a regular visitor to the High Street but somehow hadn’t visited The Deaf Cat, though I had heard good things about it.

Sadly on my first visit today the first impressions weren’t good and will probably prevent a return. There is a huge amount of competition on the High Street, not least I hate to say from the chains like Costa (which I never use), therefore it’s vital to get things right.
I visited on the Sunday of the Dickens Festival, this may have had some impact, but it wasn’t that busy and can’t be used as an excuse.
My wife and I both had a cup of tea, which was very good and served nice and hot. We also indulged in some confectionary, my wife having a slice of coffee and walnut cake which she described as average. I had the millionaires shortcake, expecting a shot of sugars to lift my flagging energy in the hot weather. Sadly this had been displayed and kept in such a way the chocolate on the top was warm and melted. The layer of caramel almost too thin to notice and the shortcake very dry. I took a couple of bites, my wife a couple more, the rest we left.
The bit that really got me though were the staff, who whilst not rude or slow just came across as miserable and not wanting to be there. Maybe they weren’t after a long hot weekend but they need to work on avoiding it being so obvious.
Reasonable prices and great tea are pointless if you feel unwelcome in a place.
