As an atheist it pains me to say that I may have found a slice of heaven.

I’ve separated my review into different areas to help future visitors:

Room:
We had a garden view ground floor room and it was exceptional. Fresh flowers and chocolates on arrival were lovely. The bathroom is absolutely huge - the same size as the bedroom again with two showers, roll-top bath, loo, two hand basins and huge mirrors, easy chairs and plenty of space for getting changed etc. In the room everything can be controlled from panels on the wall by the bed - lighting, aircon, fan, do not disturb signs etc. The aircon was fabulous. Plenty of storage space for unpacking and a dressing room area. The bed was huge and the mosquito nets were subtle. The minibar was refreshed daily and was included in the standard all inclusive package. Private patio with seating overlooking the gardens.

Pool and sunloungers:
The infinity pool was beautifully clean and wasn’t busy. There were plenty of loungers and the staff will come and make them up for you with towels. Options of sun, shade or a bit of both! The hammocks dotted around the site were also lovely to lie in and watch and listen to the ocean.

Gobi Beach:
The private beach is a five minute golf cart ride away and the carts go about every 20 minutes both ways. We often found that if staff were around and you asked nicely then they would take you whenever you wanted. A tip is always appreciated for them going out of their way for you. The beach is beautifully clean and the water was exquisitely warm. Loungers are plentiful as well and staff on hand to help in any way needed.

Grounds:
The gardens and site as a whole are immaculately well-maintained. As nature lovers we loved hearing the crickets at night and even saw the occasional bushbaby in the trees at twilight.

Spice Market buffet:
By far, the best all inclusive buffet we have ever been to. Each night the Spice Market has a different theme with entertainment to match. The Swahili night was our absolute favourite with the local authentic entertainment including tribal dancing and music as well as a pop-up street market selling local wares. It was easily our favourite night at the resort.

The Jetty Bar and Restaurant:
Lunch at the Jetty was simply divine. Highly recommend the catch of the day. Even as someone that doesn’t usually go for fish dishes, they really were outstanding. We did have one breakfast and one dinner at the Jetty but these were somewhat lacking when compared to the lunches we enjoyed.

Gobi Beach Bar and Restaurant:
We enjoyed one lunch here and as elsewhere on the resort, it was faultless. Amazing views and brilliant food.

Pool Snack Bar:
We ate here on our first day and while the menu is quite simple, the food was great. It’s certainly convenient to grab some food when lounging by the pool.

Aqua:
This restaurant in included for All Inclusive Premium but otherwise chargeable. After looking at the menu we chose not to eat here as we weren’t All Inclusive Premium and the menu didn’t tempt us enough to pay the surcharges.

The Library Bar:
The Library is open from lunchtime until late evening and we loved spending every evening here. There are board games, books and also an internet point (useful for checking into your flight and sending your boarding passes to print at reception).

Drinks:
We were spoiled for choice and enjoyed a variety of spirits, cocktails, mocktails, beers, wines and soft drinks.

Staff:
The staff are what make Melia so incredible. They work tirelessly and without exception are super friendly and attentive. The management seem to really invest in them too. The hotel ethos is that all staff should speak English when at work and whilst some staff in non-public facing roles (eg: grounds and maintenance workers) may lack confidence in their English, they will try their hardest and will often end up being promoted within the hotel to customer facing roles as their confidence grows which is a great credit to the company. Special mention must go to George in The Library Bar who became a firm friend and would have our drinks made ready for us the moment he saw us come through the lobby. Shaafi was also amazing and he spent two mornings with us; the first, teaching us the local game of Bao (to which we are now addicted and we even bought a board to take home!) and the second teaching us Swahili which really impressed all the staff when we were able to practice around the resort. The staff really appreciated us making the effort to learn their language and understand more about their culture and customs. Average pay in Zanzibar is about a dollar a day so we did tip often and generously as it really was the staff that made our stay so incredible and memorable.

Ethical credentials:
Sharing the same footprint as the hotel but not immediately obvious are an on-site donkey rescue sanctuary, dik-diks (small antelope), greenhouses and a bee hive project run by local women. Social corporate responsibility is really important to us and these projects were really impressive.

All Inclusive vs All Inclusive Premium:
We were AI rather than AIP and I didn’t really notice the difference and didn’t consider the upgrade to be necessary. The only real difference was that room service and Aqua weren’t included on AI and would be charged extra but as we didn’t require either, we chose not to upgrade.

The App:
The Melia App is definitely worth downloading. It allows you to quickly and easily make reservations for the restaurants, spa and activities and allows you to request services to your room (eg: evening turndown, laundry collection, fresh towels etc) as well as viewing the menus and evening entertainment. Highly recommend downloading and using it.

ATM:
There isn’t an ATM on site and while you will see one about a 10 minute drive from the hotel, that ATM doesn’t take cards such as Visa etc and only allows the use of local bank cards. Make sure you withdraw cash from a mainstream ATM before arriving at the hotel as whilst most things are included, I do highly recommend carrying cash for tipping as the staff do really deserve it.

Our time at Melia was absolutely incredible and without hesitation I would recommend it to anyone and I would simply love to go back. Thank you for being so awesome! Xxx

We stayed here after trekking Mt Kilimanjaro for our honeymoon for some much needed rest and relaxation. A beautiful hotel with amazingly attentive staff. We are both vegetarian and on the themed BBQ night when we enquired about the vegetarian options (of which we are sure there would have been lots!) we were invited to dine at the Aqua restaurant where the Head Chef personalised a menu just for us! What a lovely and kind thing to do which made for a really unique and special dining experience. For the rest of our stay the staff were always going out of their way to ensure we had enough food options and that we we were happy. There was always plenty and all of very good quality. The jetty bar and restaurant were wonderful and we especially enjoyed the Tapas night and Indian banquet at the Spices Restaurant. The pool area is perfect for relaxing and we highly recommend a trip to Stone Town has the Safari Blue trip for snorkelling. Thank you to all the staff for their constant smiles and warm, friendly and helpful service. We will definitely stay at a Melia hotel again after this experience. Our only comment for improvement is that we did find the evening bands at dinner to be quite cheesy and repetitive. Some local music would have been lovely rather than constant covers. I guess that’s just personal taste though. Some guests loved it!

We had THE MOST AMAZING TIME. Words cannot describe how perfect the hotel and the staff are. We just did not want to leave and will be returning very soon. Mensa, Abdullah, Hamis, Khalid and Robert made our stay very memorable.

The staff made my mum's birthday very special by decorating her room and singing and dancing for her at Aqua restaurant as well as making her a cake.

We had the time of our lives and cannot thank the staff enough!
