If you are in good shape you'll be fine. I went up one evening and stayed for sunset, which was pretty that night, the sea turned dusky pink, then the lights start going on. On a partly cloudy day it stayed light enough for 30-45 min after sunset that getting back down was no problem, no headlamp etc needed.

If you have a nervous disposition the height can be uncomfortable but the views are definitely worth it. There are some spots that require balance and the trail at some areas are more worn down than other spots. Wear shoes with tractions and grip. My daughter who was ten at the time totally conquered the trail.

I did diamond head and that was a piece of cake and so I thought kokohead shouldn’t be that much harder - boy was I WRONG!

Kokohead is definitely a challenging walk, some of the steps are huge and a small part of the walk I had to crab walk because I couldn’t trust myself not to slip and fall through the step. I saw parents carrying children on their backs, definitely would not recommend unless you are super fit.

Views at the top were great and definitely felt a sense of accomplishment once we finished the trail. If you’re up for the challenge - do it.

I read that this hike was hard - but this hike is REALLY hard if you aren’t in great shape! I struggled my way up the railroad ties and had to make many stops along the way. It is VERY steep and there are a number of spots that don’t have “steps”, so it can be a bit awkward to hike. There are lots of other people taking on the trail, which makes it that much more difficult because you’re constantly having to move around them.

This hike is quite dangerous. There is a bridge where below the railroad is nothing but a hill so you have to make sure you maintain your footing.
This trail is not easy on your ankles and calves! That being said, it’s a very rewarding experience when you make it to the top, and it’s worth doing if you think you can handle it. Be sure to prepare with lots of bottled water!

Great hike but don’t underestimate it....will be tough for average or less-than-fit people. Starts steep and gets steeper. Basically goes straight up. Add to that the Hawaii heat. Add to that a scary section in the middle where the rails are not flush to the ground but 10-20 feet above it. But it’s worth it! Amazing 360 degree views from the top, not to mention great feeling of accomplishment. But bring lots of water, Gatorade, sunscreen and pace yourself.
