We only stayed one night en route on a longer trip out west, but it was a really pretty spot to camp — we managed to reserve one of the walk-in sites overlooking the river (you can only reserve odd-numbered sites). We camped in early July and didn't get to the park until around 7, and the FCFS sites had just filled. It would also have been super peaceful if there hadn't been a group of young guys at the site next to us who didn't care about quiet hours. The walk-in sites are spaced out decently but don't have any privacy between them. They aren't a super long walk to get to - we have a big tent, and it was no big ordeal to get all our stuff to our site. They must have just redone the bathrooms here; they are by far the nicest bathrooms I've ever seen at a campground (note: no showers). Most of the sites were a decent size that would have accommodated our 10x15 tent. Overall really nice, and we'd definitely stay here again.

This park has quickly become one of my favorite National Parks. The campground is part of the reason. The host is incredibly friendly and helpful. The rangers are informative. The campsites are spacious and the amenities are clean.

The south loop has 2 bathroom locations with flush toilets. Water spigots are throughout the campground and very accessible.

Wildlife frequents the campground. Bison were right behind my site. Someone else reported also seeing wild horses. We’ve also spotted several rattlesnakes. None are to be feared...just keep your distance and don’t interfere with them.

Room tip: It was first come first serve when I visited. They had plenty of sites that week. I recommend getting in early to grab a site.

We camped here one night on our cross country road trip. We originally planned to be there two nights but we left early because inclement weather was coming our way. We stayed along the river and had the most beautiful views. The site wasn't super private but private enough for us and our pup. We loved that it's pet friendly and saw many other people with dogs. It was a quiet campground too considering all the dogs. It also filled up to capacity which surprised us in September. Bathrooms were not that great. We also really loved exploring the park.

It is primitive and places are wide but not deep. Good place to stay and enjoy quiet after the generators are asleep. The park has been rerouted through Medora and some of that is good and some things are not Ted Roosevelt might not approve on some of the commercialism.

Room tip: This isn’t a hotel

We have visited this park a number of times in the last couple years. This year again we were stuck in a spot so close to neighbors you get smell what they were cooking. We have a motorcycle and a small pop-up camper that takes no room at all. I noticed a lot of sites still open that were bigger more private and a lot nicer than where we were. The other thing there were so many dogs barking they drove us nuts. Wife got up one morning to take a shower only to find it had only cold water. A lot of the trees are in bad shape need pruning as I noticed a lot of dead branches that could hurt someone or somebody’s camper or vehicle
Not a happy camper!!
