Owner description: Located north of Flagstaff, this crater was created by a volcanic eruption 900 years ago.

We have been to other volcano sites, but this one was unique in the fact that we could clearly see the impact that the eruption had on the landscape. We took the time to walk on several of the paths and examine the impact of the lava flow on the terrain. When coupled with visiting Wupatki National Monument, this is an area that you absolutley need to visit.

Large lava bed with walking paths through it. Visitor center is where you pay the fee and can watch a short film about volcanoes. Nice flat viewing site and paths at the bottom of the volcano. Pretty area to take a lot of pictures.

Interesting area. Very windy the day K visited so didn't venture far from viewing ares. Think the map received could better identify exactly where to pull off the road. 15 miles between Sunset crater and, Wupatki and another 14 to return to 89. Stopped on way to Grand Canyon so wanted to get back on 89. At Wupatki visitors center got trail guide wished had opportunity to hear a ranger talk.

Having been to Crater's of the Moon in ID, we thought this would be about the same. This was much better. The cinder cones here were huge. Very nice park & you get the bonus of Wupalki. Drive between the two was kind of boring.

We didn't realize that we would see volcanic history while visiting Arizona. This park is definitely worth the visit. We hiked the Lenox Trail and the Lava Flow Trail, both moderate and very interesting. Actually walking thru the lava field.
