We visited the Seljalandsfoss waterfall at night. Weather gave us a slow start getting to the area from Reykjavík, so we skipped this earlier in the day to be able to get to the ice cave on time. We were the only ones there initially and the sky was full of stars. It actually was warmer that evening compared to earlier in the day when it snowed at the other locations we visited.
On our way to the black sand beach, we came across the majestic Seljalandsfoss waterfall, standing at an impressive 200 feet tall, it’s quite a sight to behold when looking up at it. I was told you can walk behind the waterfall, but I chose not to feeling the powerful spray and wind from the falls was enough for me to appreciate its strength and splendour.
If you're in the area, definitely drop by it's worth the visit!
Stunning set of waterfalls, which are just set a short distance from the main road.
We couldn’t get behind the main waterfall as the path was closed due to ice.
Some of the smaller falls along the path were almost completely frozen over and were nothing more than one huge icicle hanging from the cliff face, indeed there were some blocks of ice which had fallen down onto the path.
Access to the waterfalls is free but parking was 1000 ISK minimum for a car, the toilets were free though. There is also a small shop and a kiosk selling hot/cold drinks & snacks/sandwiches.
When we visited in late Nov as part of a 2-day South Coast tour, the waterfall was largely iced up, which made it look really cool, and great for photos.
Well formed paths to get to it and further beyond to see further waterfalls in the vicinity.
Unfortunately there were far too many tourists jostling for position to take their photos, so suggest if you do get an opportunity to choose the time of your visit, make it early or later in the day.
This is one of the more popular waterfalls on the south coast. It is located right on the ring rode. What is unique about this waterfall is that you can walk behind it in the cave formed behind the waterfall. It is also very misty. You will get very wet walking to it and behind it and then back again. However, it is very impressive and definitely worth visiting.
