Beautiful quiet place, lovely people

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 28 Jun 2024
The place is very quiet and peaceful, such an expected, with a wonderful view all around. It is a poetic and bucolic venue in front of the volcano.
The room is very cosy and comfy, super clean as well and warm.
But, the most important is the team on site ! They are lovely people, welcoming, helpful and kind.
Fun fact (well, not that fun but still, it will be a good memory) : I had a puncture on my way out and my host and his girlfriend were very nice to me. He fixed it efficiently with a wild (but super clever) workshop in the middle of nowhere. And he saved the day ! I am forever grateful ;-)

I chose the Hotel Leirubakki because it offered reasonably priced rooms, it is in a lovely out of the way location, and because they have horseback riding on site. The friendly staff at the Hotel Leirubakki did not disappoint!

We had reserved 3 rooms for our family of 5 and all 3 rooms were cute, clean, spacious, and comfortable. We were very happy with our rooms.

The property was peaceful as we walked around visiting the horses and checking out the Viking hot pool.

Breakfast was in a pleasant dining area and was a very nice, but typical, European continental breakfast.

For us, the highlight of our stay was our chance to ride the famous Icelandic horses. The Hotel Leirubakki is on a horse farm. At the farm, they do not give you a crowded horse ride with overworked horses, instead they share a riding experience with their guests and limit tours to one a day and just a few days a week. The horses are always treated wonderfully.

We had a private tour with just our family of 5. And we had 3 very nice young woman who helped us out and took care of us the entire time. None of us had riding experience and one person in our group was initially going to pass because she was afraid of riding. But our 3 guides were so patient and helpful, so she decided to give it a try (and LOVED the experience). Another person in our group had injured her ankle so getting on and off her horse was a real challenge. But again, our guides went above and beyond to help her out and make sure she was able to ride.

After making sure we were all settled on our horses, the guides gave us all instructions and let us walk our horses around the barn until we were all comfortable with what we needed to do. Then off we went through the Hotel Leirubakki's farm land.

After a lovely ride, we returned to the barn then visited with our 3 guides and the horses for another 30 minutes or so. They were so accommodating and took their time answering all of our questions and letting us treat and pet the horses. We never felt rushed to leave and would probably have stayed longer if our time permitted.

While our ride was the highlight of our stay, all in all we loved the Hotel Leirubakki and all the folks we met there.

I would highly recommend visiting the Hotel Leirubakki especially if your bucket list includes riding the famous Islandic Horses. The horses at Leirubakki are world famous champions that can trace their origins to the famous Kolkuós bloodline.

Unfortunately we only stayed one night, but this was definitely a very pleasant surprise.

Very nice, comfortable and homey rooms. Good sleep quality, nice hot tub, and a very good restaurant. Nice view of Hekla. .....and very fiendly owner.
Plus... fairly priced.

Wood definitely recommend this place on an iceland trip

I can’t say enough good things about this hotel! The accommodations are extremely modest (tiny room with a tiny bathroom) but that’s to be expected when traveling to this type of country. If you’re looking for a luxury hotel you’ll be hard pressed to find one in this remote region of Iceland. If you’re looking for a clean bed, great food and spectacular hospitality this is your place!

The owner was so kind to us. He gave us bread to take when we went into the pasture to visit the horses (one of the best parts of our stay, but be aware they are very curious and will explore every inch of you with their mouths; nibbling on your hair, chewing on your boots, trying to eat your down coat etc 😂). But most importantly as soon as he heard we planned to travel the entire ring road he pulled up the weather forecasts to guide us on which direction we should travel - east or west - which ended up being the saving grace of our trip. We originally planned on heading west and he showed us the weather patterns and recommended we switch our plan. We managed to avoid all but one day of heavy rain on our ten day journey.

There’s a hot tub outside which was amazing, especially when the northern lights peeked out! Upstairs is a cozy common area where we played cards and made friends with other guests.

Best of all was the dinner. The food and wine at the hotel’s restaurant was AMAZING! Do not skip the opportunity for some awesome local cuisine. Get the skyr cake!

Would definitely recommend this place!

The hotel was very bare and expensive for the price they charge. When we arrived it was nobody waiting and we never saw anyone at the desk the whole time we were there. The room did not even have a coffee maker. No Tv and cheap curtains. There were dirty marks on the walls and only one outlet on the whole room. Breakfast- poor!
The girl that opened the door was from Latvia and she was the best part of stay- polite, helpful and extremely kind!
