Very basic

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 19 Oct 2017via mobile
This place is a very basic accommodation. The rooms are clean, the food was excellent! You dont get housekeeping on a daily basis. It is out in the middle of nowhere, so perfect if you are looking to really get away from it all. You definately need a car or have arrangements for tours set up in advance.

Nothing special about this hotel that is remote from anything else. This give you an opportuanity to maybe see the "northern lights". The price, also include dinner, so it is not bad, considering the cost of dinner in Iceland. Just get use to lamb or artic Char as your choices. We did enjoy our one day stay. Room were clearn, but there is nothing to do in the vening. Thank god for the free wifi. This is what you should expect as you travel to see the Golden Circle of Iceland. We are here for the scenic, not hotels.

We splurged on a "quad" room at a hefty price, thinking we were staying at a nice hotel. We were shocked when we found our room was in the basement of owner's house, cramped, tiny and two-tiered bunks! We never would have paid the money we paid to stay in bunks. Also, the hotel room picture and description never mentioned bunks, so we thought we were reserving a normal hotel room. I felt angry and duped. It was the only place I have stayed where I felt the hotel falsely advertised. We didn't have any choice to find another place because everything was sold out. If it was properly advertised as a bunk room, we would have stayed elsewhere. Pros: It was right near the road to Landmannelaugar Nature Reserve, and the bus stopped right at the hotel, so it was very convenient. Landmannelaugar is a must-see-- our favorite hike of our Iceland trip. Also the front desk lady Anna was super helpful-- A++ for superior customer service. Therefore I averaged the rating.

We stayed here for one night on our trip around the southern eastern tour of the Ring road. As we were driving out of Hella we actually thought our GPS was confused, we drove for miles in the country side sounded by horse farms and then we finally arrived. We loved the unique architecture of the main restaurant and the food was delicious. Interestingly it seemed like most of the guest were actually from Iceland! It was nice to get away from the crowds and submerge ourselves into the Icelandic countryside, even if for one night! The room was simple and very clean!!

Hey!
Thank you for a lovely review :) We are a bit far away, but the distance gets shorter every time you drive the way. In the end, the way is full of beautiful scenery we hope our guests enjoy while driving!

We try to get guests both from Iceland and from other countries and we are so happy that you drove away from our place as happy as we wished :)

Take care, and you are always welcome back at Leirubakki in your future trips.

Been thinking about this review for some time, but if you want to write a review you have to be honest !

Remote location 30 km from Hella and about 2 hours from Landmannalaugar , a must see!
Different types of rooms, a camping, restaurant, pool, horse riding

We stayed 2 nights in the hotel. Friendly reception. Wifi and tea/coffee in lobby only
Rooms are basic, bathroom small and old but clean
In other countries you would get a lot more for your money, but not in Iceland

Breakfast is very basic.
There is a restaurant , in a nice building, but food was only avarave and too expensive

Later in the day there is nobody at the reception

Why was this a terrible stay?

Day 1 there arrived a bus a chinese tourists and they almost took over the place: no respect for other people, yelling, bags with food, dominating the lobby...
When my wife went to get a cup.of tea, she was pushed away
We complained at the reception and later the young manager come to talk to us
At the end these chinese guest calmed down , but still prepaired their food in the sitting room. No a single person at the reception
Night was quiet unti 4 am, when the chinese started walking around,
Day 2. Russian guests sitting in the lobby, loud noice, smoking and later drinking
One man got very drunk and was yelling until very late that night
Not a single person at the reception and not much sleep

When checking out, there was an older person at the reception, who listened to our complaints without any interest or any form of empathy, only taking our money

We were happy to leave !

Good day sir.
Here at Leirubakki, we welcome all nationalities with gratitude. We try our best to keep the atmosphere as good as it can get, the place has many magnificent views and (as you said your self) friendly staff.

It‘s true, we don‘t have a nightguard, but when guests have a problem on our premises, they can always call the private phone number (the manager's phone number), which is written in all rooms at the hotel.

When we greet guests at the hotel, we don‘t ask them to behave a certain way, and our job cannot be to make sure everyone likes everybody. But here in Iceland, most people live by this good saying from a children's novel: „all the animals in the forest should be friends“. I wonder if your complaints would have been the same, had the tourists for example been from the US or western Europe?

When guests at our place are not satisfied with our services we try our best to make up for that. I tried that after you and your wife met the newly arriving guests in the lobby. I brought you a complimentary bottle of wine, and that you don't mention, which makes me a bit sad. I hope you did not forget that one :)

I hope that one day you will see your way back to us, to enjoy our facilities, beautiful surroundings and nature again.

All the best,
Fríða – the young manager.

We loved our last minute stay here. They offer nice clean rooms as well as sleeping bag accommodations. Everything in the room was in great condition and clean, check in and check out couldn't have been easier. Highly recommended.
