Incredible Stay in the Scenic Icelandic Countryside

Review of Hotel Ranga
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 5 weeks agovia mobile
Our experience at Hotel Ranga was nothing short of amazing!! The hotel and grounds are breathtaking, and the service could not have been better! We booked a standard room which was neither small nor large, but it was very clean and had a jetted tub. The common areas of the hotel were beautifully decorated, and most were lined with many windows that showed off the Icelandic countryside to its best advantage. The first night we arrived, my husband and I went to the bar to get our first-night complimentary drinks, and we had the privilege of meeting the hotelier. We really enjoyed talking with him, and he was incredibly kind and generous with us! The second night, we had a reservation at the Ranga Restaurant and had an absolutely spectacular meal. My husband had the lamb main course (he said it was the best lamb of his life), and I had the salmon main course which was amazing. The cocktails were delicious, and for dessert we had the mascarpone and the carrot cake which were both to die for!! The outdoor hot tubs were clean and the perfect way to unwind after a day of sightseeing. The only thing about our stay that wasn't perfect was that we missed the Northern Lights and the astronomer who was scheduled to come to the hotel canceled due to cloudy conditions. None of that is the fault of the hotel, but it does give us a reason to need to come back for another amazing stay!

Room Tip: Even with the wakeup service, weather night prevent you from seeing the Northern Lights, so...

What a wonderful place! Beautiful views, charming rooms, fabulous dining and an astronomer on site to tell you about the stars and planets and the northern lights. We loved it here. We wished we had planned to stay more than one night. The dinner menu is lovely, and the dining room is gorgeous with three walks if windows looking out toward the river. The astronomer is an added benefit that can’t be measured. So wonderful! Staff was helpful and lovely—thank you to all!

5 stars for the staff, who were excellent, 4 stars for restaurant--very good but extremely expensive for the experience, and 3 stars for the accommodations...VERY rudimentary and inexpensively furnished. Very dated and desperately in need of upgrading. For US$700 per night, definitely poor value...but not a lot in the area.

Without asking for it I was upgraded to a deluxe room. I had a very good dinner and mostly impressed by reindeer meat, which is very rare in restaurants because difficulty to obtain it. Beside basic gun license and hunting card, applicants for reindeer shooting must take a special test which includes shooting 5 bullets within 5 minutes and all must hit a target 14 cm diameter at a 100 meter distance. This year the reindeer hunting quota was 800 and a draw for reindeer tags the first week of February. The price of a tag is 110.000 - 193.000 per reindeer.

The hotel has an understated elegance. There are unique pieces of art throughout the hotel with interesting descriptions of the artist and significance of the pieces. The rooms are minimalist but comfortable for a couple and the beds were very comfortable. there are 3 hot tubs which overlook the hotel grounds. The hotel restaurant is first rate. A nice breakfast is included with the rooms. We had several dinners in the restaurant and all of the dishes were excellently prepared and plated. The menu had a number of interesting fish and meat options; however, not that many choices for vegetarians. All of the staff were wonderful. They were all pleasant and knowledgeable about the area. Hotel Ranga is centrally located to a number of spectacular sites on the southern part of the country. The most we traveled in any direction was 3 hours and we saw some amazing natural beauty and had some fabulous hikes. The hotel is fairly expensive but the location and ambiance make it worth it if you want a luxury experience.

One of the nicest hotels we've stayed in and definitely the nicest in Iceland. Their service is impeccable. The beds and bedding were amazing. Rooms have a door from the hallway and another to the back of the property toward the creek. We were blessed to have one of the 3 hot tubs right outside our room through the back door. Great shower with a large tub, bathroom big enough for 2 to be in at the same time (rare in Iceland/Europe). The breakfasts were phenomenal. Dinner was very good, a bit pricey but worth it to not have to drive elsewhere so our driver could have a glass or two of wine. They even had an astronomer beginning 9/1 which was our first night there - stargazing through a large telescope. They offer wake up service if the northern lights appear. Highly recommend.
