Decent but overpriced

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 15 Aug 2021
We've been there twice already for 1 night stay. Mostly because of location wich is close to Highlands and nice attractions you can see with regular 4x4 car. Sleep was good, burgers were fantastic. Rooms are tiny, like really tiny but the prices are similar to some exclusive hotels in the South, which means its just overpriced because there's nothing else around to stay. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Wifi has small limit of devices connected so if its crowdy, theres small chance it will work for you when you need it. There is gas station at the place and that's a big plus.

One feels out in the nowhere at the Highland Center. It‘s a good layover to do self drive tours and come back. The Canyon walk starting at the house is very recommended as views are spectacular and it‘s only 25 minutes one way. Our room was small and spartanic but clean and practical. The Wifi was very good and stable. Dinner and breakfast was simple but good quality and food sized portions. All staff had been very friendly and helpful with a smile. The self serve gas station is an asset, especially as we planned to take the F208 route with a full tank. All in all well worth a visit.

I stayed here twice this summer (2020) for a total of 6 days.

There is one and only one reason to stay here: easy access to Landmannalaugar and the surrounding area of the south-central Highlands (Fjallabak Nyrðri).

There is so much potential to this place but indifference by the management to customer satisfaction means none of it is realized. The staff is almost wholly foreign. They are friendly but there is no warmth, nothing that gives the guest a welcoming feeling.

The rooms are fairly comfortable (given that we are in the Highlands). Servicing and cleaning of the rooms (for more than a night's stay) was below par.

The restaurant is dismal. Good luck if you are a vegetarian or if you don't fancy eating burgers and fried foods.

Most people spend only a night here, but if you are booked for a longer stay it is a good idea to bring along your own food.

Let’s start with some positives, the center is located a 1hr drive from Landmannalaugar, there is a nice sauna and the food is affordable and the burgers are decent. On to the bad, the curtains do not block light, instead they channel light directly onto the pillow. The pillows are so thin and clumpy they feel like they’ve been homemade. The bathroom smells like an airplane toilet - I don’t exaggerate. All of this might be fine if they charged one third of the price, but their rates are highway robbery. They clearly have a monopoly on local accommodation but given the obscene prices they charge they need to at least replace all the pillows and duvets, and put in new curtains or blinds so you don’t have light shining in your eyes at night. If they could fix this, it would be a massive improvement and my rating would be closer to 4 stars - it doesn’t take much.

We spent one night at the Highland Center in February. It was very cozy and nice. The place is ideally located if you want to explore Landmannalaugar and the area. The staff is very friendly and the food was great.

If you have gone as far as the Highland Centre you will know there are no other places to eat up there, and its the last place to buy fuel for a very long way if travelling north. I have visited several times and the place is very clean and warm, with a fairly basic lunch time menu in winter. Like all of Iceland, if you come from the UK, you will think it is expensive, but it is what you have to pay in Iceland. Had a good basic lunch with unlimited tea/coffee for a reasonable (Icelandic) price. Staff always friendly and helpful, but also busy as there are only a few and they have to look after the accommodation as well. It is a good place to take a break and get some food and drinks. I will use again next time I am in the area.
