Owner description: This museum, located at The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, is one of the finest medical history museums in America. The Mütter Museum is a 19th century style cabinet museum displaying medical artifacts such as anatomical specimens and medical instruments. Marvel at the beauty and strangeness of the human body. NOTICE FOR 2017: There will be no elevator access to the Mütter Museum for all of January and February 2017. The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, home of The Mütter Museum and Historical Medical Library, will be installing a new elevator from January 1st, 2017. Our new elevator will drastically improve access to our collections and events and visitors will be able to enjoy regular access as of early March, 2017. From January 1st - end of February, anyone unable to navigate stairs will not be able to get into our building. There will not be a ramp. Additionally, due to installation of an exciting new exhibit, access to the gallery currently hosting our Vesalius exhibit will be restricted from mid-January until early March, 2017. More details about this new exhibit will be released shortly. We apologize sincerely for any and all inconvenience that this will inevitably cause, however this vital and important maintenance to our historic building will greatly enhance our visitor experience going forward. Thank you so much for your patience.

Not really appropriate for little children - some of the displays are a little disturbing, but I think it's appropriate for children over 13. That said, the museum as several halls of medical curiosities that will purplex and even astound. Overall I really enjoyed the museum... certainly filled with many things I have never seen or even knew were possible. I would have given 5 stars, but it is spottily curated. Some exhibits are well documented and informative, others, for which one might have genuine interest, are not explained at all. I also found the confounding the Grimm's tales and some of the exhibits, imaginative, but confusing.

While the subjects covered may not be for everyone, they offer something not often seen.
Information is presented well about what you are seeing.
Special exhibits such as Hair Art, and the truth behind Famous Fairy Tales was well thought out.
Keep in mind this is a smaller museum and does get busy (crowded) on rainy days or weekends. Many items have smaller info cards and lighting is dim. Patience is a must in this museum., and most likely not a child friendly museum.
Nice outdoor historic garden offers a nice place to take a break from the exhibits.

While I had seen the museum on television and been referred by friends I wasn't ready for the sheer numbers of gross cool creepy things. It will give your hypochondria a whole new level. It was very crowded and parking is difficult but the bus helps.

My son wanted to go for his birthday. We went on a Saturday which apparently is a very crowed day according to a sign posted on their door. The exhibits were interesting.I am not a medical person and a little squeamish, but I did not have a problem with the exhibits. Well worth the visit.
