I wanted to enjoy my stay at the Copley House, supporting a small business in a quieter and more centrally located area of the city but this became a very disappointing situation very fast. I apologize for the lengthy review.
The hotel was easy enough to find, set in a charming neighborhood of brownstones, but as I opened the door I was ambushed by the very overwhelming scent of marijuana, to each their own, but I don’t want that smell in the “smoke free” establishment I am staying in. When I first checked in I was pleased, I was pleasantly greeted by staff, offered an “upgrade” to a room that had a private bathroom, even though I have proof that I had done that when I booked online. I was staying for 4 nights total. The room was seeming suitable; I didn’t need much, there was a bed, a bathroom and kitchenette, all just average. Halfway through my stay, things took a turn for the worst, as my husband went to use the bathroom at night he found cockroaches. He turned on the lights and they scurried away but not without us getting a picture of a decently sized one first. We had to call the “emergency line” after calling the desk twice, there was no answer and the voicemail box was full (I was told there would be someone to answer 24 hours) and the younger gentleman that was there offered to come to our room right away. He said he could call maintenance and change our room, it was 3AM. We were initially offered to move to the room next door-neither my husband or I felt that room was infestation free so we were moved to the building next door. This was later considered an “upgrade”, a room with a less convenient set up with a smaller bed. The next morning, we were notified maintenance took care of the issue, I’m not sure how this would have been resolved so quickly. Ultimately, the two us felt so dirty and unsettled that we needed to check out and stay somewhere else, we attempted to get a refund for at least the night stay with the unwelcomed guests and were denied this because of the said upgrade, the offer was a mere 10% off our stay ($20). When we informed the desk of our departure we were told we had ten minutes to pack up and get out as that was all we had until check out and we would be charged if we were not gone.
I have lived in New England my entire life, most of it living in the Boston area, I am aware of the type of cockroaches native to this region (Oriental cockroach-which this was). They are considered the “dirtier” cockroaches and harbor illness carrying bacteria and I am not one to typically complain but I am five months pregnant and try to stay as healthy as possible. I typically can overlook many things, but uncleanliness and bad customer service are not some of them. I would not recommend this establishment to anyone.
