I have had a hard time deciding between giving the Shack a 3 or 4 star rating. I definitely feel like this was not their best night, and our suspicious were confirmed by our waiter, who told us the kitchen was having a rough night. We were sat on time for our reservation, and glasses of water appeared fairly quickly and my glass of wine followed shortly thereafter. Then we didn't see any one for 15 minutes. Now, we went on a Saturday night and had changed our reservation time by 30 minutes, and this last minute change was accommodated very nicely. However, it was early and the restaurant did not appear busy enough to explain a 15 minute wait to place our order. After quite a lengthy interim, our starters arrived, butterbean hummus on toast and pimento cheese with crackers, and they were excellent. Our second course (charred peas) was very good as well (loved it!), but our main dishes left a little to be desired. My boyfriend had steelhead salmon, which was decent, but not memorable, and I had the lambchetta which was...not my favorite. It was a little on the tough and dry side, and the wrapping, a pork belly I believe, was hard as a rock and inedible in places. We chose to sit out on the patio, which was quite nice, but to manage expectations, you are sitting on a side street overlooking the gas station. I nice arbor/pergola would really improve the outdoor ambiance. We actually had to skip dessert as our meal took 2 hours and we were already running late to a function, but I would like to try this restaurant again and see if the experience improved at all. We met folks who had eaten there the weekend before, and they said it was the best culinary experience they had ever had, so I know the potential is there. To note, our server, Matt, was more inclined to chat up the locals than to provide service on par with the food the restaurant was trying to produce. We hope that was a one night thing as well.
