....leave with the cookies!

Mrs Rowes is a Virginia standard - it's been around for a very long time. Here you can get some good home cooking - but if you want the best they have, get the fried chicken! Oh yum! A side of collard greens won't disappoint either! As you're paying your check and getting ready to hit the road, DON'T FORGET THE COOKIES!! You definitely won't be disappointed that you have a sack of these jewels for your ride down the highway!!

A friend of our entered the restaurant as a customer was leaving and the waitress was nasty to them. Not the kind of environment a traveler want to face.

This restaurant is located right next to the Best Western, so we found it convenient. We both had the meat loaf. It was tasty, but not very hot. Mashed potatoes were also not hot. The salad was small, but fresh.
I had my eye on the dessert menu.....coconut cream pie. It's apparently their most popular and best dessert. However, there was some sort of party set up in the other room, and although no one had showed up yet, there was a slice of coconut cream pie on each setting, and therefore none left for me. It wasn't even that late in the evening!! That was disappointing, because although I settled for pecan, it's just not the same thing. The meal was actually pretty expensive for the area and the cuisine. If we go back (doubtful), I will check on pie availability first, and secondly, ask that the food be hot.

Since I am typically not in this part of Virginia when visiting family, it was a pleasant surprise to end up here on a Saturday drive from central Virginia. My brother and sister-in-law brought me here over Thanksgiving weekend.
The restaurant has been in this location for 70 years. That tells the story of how good it is! The place had a nice group for early afternoon. We were quickly seated, after walking past the pie and cookie bakery cases.
My brother and I ordered chicken salad sandwiches with chips. My sister-in-law got a club with a side of mac and cheese. We totally enjoyed our meals, especially because they were presented on homemade breads. The chicken salad was real chicken with only minimal mayonnaise. It was the best I have had in a long time.
Of course we could not leave without enjoying a piece of homemade pie. My brother and I both got the Butterscotch Cream pie. My sister-in-law enjoyed a piece of Pecan pie.Leaving nothing on our plates was a testament to just how good everything was.
This is one place I would go back to whenever I get the chance. If you are in Staunton, find it and stop!

We have stopped here for many years and have always been pleased. This time I was disappointed. My breakfast bacon was cold as were the home fries. Eggs were okay and the homemade white bread with apple butter delicious. Must have been an "off"" day...
