We found this place on tripadvisor and had to try it. We were greeted and seated even though we did not have reservations. It was early but got very busy, Friday night. I asked the waiter his recommendations and he said to do the four course meal (tasting) and since shellfish were 1 of the courses my date ordered the New York strip steak /Brussel spouts/ potatoes and pate all were excellent. I had soup, scallops, beef tenderloins and dessert. It was a very good ,paced mea with excellent food.

My wife and I had a reservation for 5:45 pm on a Saturday evening because we were going to a production at the American Shakespeare Center and needed to be there by 7:15 pm. The theater was only a half block away. We got to the restaurant and seated at 5:40 pm. We each ordered a drink which arrived right away. We then ordered our food. We both ordered the soup and it came right away, so by 6 pm, we had finished our soups and just needed the entrees. We figured we even had time for a glass of port after dinner. Well we were wrong. No one let us know about the delay so around 6:25, I asked our waitress. She indicated that she had put the order in plenty of time and had already spoken to the manager about the delay. I waited a few more minutes and then found the manager. She indicated that "sometimes on Friday or Saturday we do get backed up. Also, your wife ordered the trout which is made fresh and takes a full 30 minutes." I told her that we ordered everything over 40 minutes ago. Finally at around 6:50 pm, we got our entrees. The trout was not de-boned (we knew this and they offered to de-bone it but not wanting to wait anymore, she proceeded herself). Needless to say we both had to rush through our entrees; even had to leave some so we can get our the door by 7:10 to not be late for our seats at the play. The manager did give us a $20 gift card to come back, but we gave this to our innkeepers for we are never going back.

We arrived early and were the only patrons for a bit. Our service was good, the server was efficient and attentive but not that personable (kind of matter of fact). The wine offerings offered something for every budget. There were 3 menus, the chef tasing menu, the daily menu, and the steak menu (not really a menu). We bypassed the chef tasting menu because it didn't offer options we were interested in. Instead we chose starters, entrees and dessert from the daily menu. Of our starters, Cauliflower bisque and the glazed Broccoli, the bisque was our favorite. Taste and viscosity were excellent. Our entrees, Grilled Swordfish and Fettuccine with Fall vegetables were both enjoyable. The swordfish was cooked perfectly although the chard beneath it was a bit tough and chewy making a composed bite less enjoyable than just a bite of the swordfish. The mushrooms offered enough of a textural complement. The homemade pasta was al-dente but a bit dense for our liking. The vegetables were well cooked and the sauce provided a nice binder for all the ingredients. Dessert was a bit disappointing. We opted for the Gingerbread with a lemon anglaise. The Gingerbread didn't have that gingerbread texture and was lacking in gingerbread flavor. An additional part of the dish was a chunky minced meat pie type mixture that on it's own was flavorful. However, the two didn't seemed to compliment each other; we tended to eat them separately rather than as a composed dish. This was our first visit but we will return on our next visit to Staunton to sample the local fare.

Dined solo on Sunday evening early without reservation. No wait. Comfortable atmosphere at the right temperature, nice music at right volume. Cocktail Unencumbered was delicious. Wine selection very good. Excellent salad starter, swordfish was large portion with perfectly cooked swiss chard and mushrooms. The very center of the swordfish was a tad on the rare side but absolutely delicious. Was not overly salty but I have a sensitive palette to salt. Could have dialed it back a teensy bit. Dessert of chocolate torte with raspberry and whipped cream was perfection of flavors and the right portion for one person. Nice art on the walls.

We had a large party of nine and sampled many of the menus varied items. This was one of the best restaurants I have frequented with a very pleasant atmosphere. The appetizers we sampled were the cornbread, Brussels sprouts, cheese board, and fried oysters, very tasty. The main courses we sampled were, friend pork chop, golden trout, sirloin steak and the molasses chicken breast. There were happy faces all around. The service was spot on and the ambiance was bistro like.
