So - we booked this hotel for a two-night stay for our first ever visit to Ischia. I'd fallen in love with Procida on an earlier visit and hoped Ischia might match this. We were also looking forward to the experience as the hotel looked very nice from what we could see online. On our arrival (having boarded one of the hellishly packed buses from the port there is seemingly no escape from unless you pay extortionate taxi fares) we were informed that due to some guests 'not understanding a 10am check-out' the hotel was, in fact, unable to accommodate us and so instead we were going to be put up for the night at its sister hotel in Lacco Ameno proper (will review this separately). There was a brief mention of the word 'overbooking' from the ever so charming manager, (a smile which did not extend to the eyes) which I suspect was at the root of the issue although it never became entirely clear to us why the situation had arisen. My boyfriend wondered if the hotel had a policy of putting guests who had paid the lowest rates online in the alternative hotel as a way of getting as many guests in as possible but there is no way of knowing....Anyway, initial mollification was attempted with a complimentary drink from a grumpy bar man and then we were driven away to the other hotel which was definitely not 4 star but which I'll review elsewhere. It's all a massive shame because the next day we returned to get our room (sea view) which was about a million times nicer than the one we'd stayed in the night before. We also had to wait more than an hour to get the room when we transferred back despite being told the room would be ready within 15 minutes: all of which was very frustrating because we were only there for such a short time. The general vibe was that we were a massive nuisance (both hotels seemed to be full of holidaying Italians) and other than a cursory and fairly insincere 'thanks for your understanding' we felt the staff here were quite unfriendly (to us anyway). The hotel itself is very beautiful, but quite 'resort-y'. In its favour it was a short walk from the Nagombo thermal spa which we had a lovely at (restaurant there was particularly lovely and very friendly)....and had we been able to actually experience our booking as planned, we would have enjoyed the stay a lot. Just beware the potential for being moved to a different (inferior) hotel. We left at least £250 lighter and feeling a bit done over....

I travelled to Ischia to relax and destress like most of the tourists on the island. San Lorenzo was the perfect spot with multiple (6) pools and it was quite during the winter.

Hint: bring your own robe. The hotel charges 12 euros to rent the robe for your whole stay. You can use a shower cap (included in your room) for the pool.

Hope my review is helpful. I stayed in a sea view room 159 on the 3rd floor.

Position of hotel is good, rooms are clean and spacious enough, gardens surrounding the hotel have a way to one self relaxation. Easy and close to go by to the sea or the bay. I preferred the public beach and it was such a joy to .mingle with the locals/ Thermal park is also very close and it's worth the experience We stayed there for a couple of days, breakfast was terrible and with very few options to choose from, bad bad coffee, for the other meals we just preferred to go to the bay as there are many local restaurants. Pool has indeed salted water but it's added in, not natural. The head waiter is grumpy. Internet only in the lobby and it works poorly

The hotel enjoys beautiful views overlooking the pretty village of Lacco Ameno and the Montano Bay both reachable with a 10 minutes walk. The rooms are clean and spacious and although not very modern they give a feeling of Mediterranean effortless elegance. During our stay we didn't use any of the Spa facilities, but the green gardens, several small pools and Jacuzzi that surround the structure provide an ideal setting for a relaxing vacation. The food is extremely good and varied with always a choice of fish and local specialities. A definite hit for me that supply plenty of Ischitan charm.

We didn't know what to expect. A friend said, "You need T.L.C. Go to Ischia. We fished around on the net and found this hotel, with its own hot salt water pool, thermal baths, spas and hidden outside a gem of a very hot thermal spa with cold splash pool. Perfect for our needs. Camillo, the young man who works practically 24/7 is probably the most hard working, gentlemanly, kind and helpful hotelier I have ever come across. He's patient and polite and made our stay so incredibly enjoyable. He suggested several places to explore, eat, visit and shop so we cannot fault him and the owners of San Lorenzo should be paying him big bonuses. He's a treasure.

Some of the drawbacks are that the spa has two prices. One in Italian and one in English. Beware you don't pay the English prices. They're about 20% more. The food in the restaurant is to be avoided. It's not even 5 out of 10 so don't take the half board. However there are so many local restaurants, including an excellent family run restaurant in nearby Casamicciola, Pizzeria Zelluso, a real find. The spa gets turned off at 7:30pm. The head waiter is grumpy. Internet only in the lobby which was no problem. There are a lot of groups of older people who come to the hotel but we didn't care. Camillo helped book us a scooter at the best price and also booked us a terrific trek. Go to Piano Ligueri, it's not to be missed, especially the restaurant there. Just brilliant. The bathroom was teeny tiny. I'm not sure if they're all like that but worth checking.

Room tip: Definitely ask for a sea view, 2nd floor is better than 3rd from what we could surmise.
