My partner and I just returned from a 5-night stay in Villa Svizzera. The hotel is lovely, a bit old fashioned but in a charming kind of way, with a small but relaxing pool area and basic but clean and comfortable room. The food was plentiful and for the most part excellent (we only had one main course at dinner that neither of us enjoyed).

The area surrounding the hotel has a range of good restaurants, shops and small beaches with loungers, with the larger San Montano bay just a short walk away. The bus stop right outside the hotel takes you around the whole island, so it is very conveniently located for exploring.

The clientele is largely older Italians, so we did get a few odd looks for being a) very obviously not Italian and b) under the age of 30. If you are looking for a livelier holiday you might prefer somewhere else, but for us our stay was perfect.

Very well located, near the sea front and village bars, restaurants and shops. Also handy for buses and taxies. Whilst the hotel is a little dated, this adds to the charm, further enhanced by the very friendly and helpful staff. Our room wasn’t huge, and the air con could have been more efficient, however it was well located and maintained. The hotel has a fantastic indoor thermal pool (38 degrees!) and equally good outdoor sea water pool, with pool bar. The food wasn’t particularly imaginative, but was well cooked, presented and plentiful: the wine was also good value for money. It speaks volumes there appeared to be a high percentage of return guests, many of them mature Italians. The hotel was blissfully quiet, with entertainment on only the Friday night; not our preference but most other guests appeared to enjoy it. Overall a great place to stay, particularly if you don’t like big modern hotels.

I have to say our room was nothing special - and we didn't have a sea view - but on the other hand there was lots to make up for that. The staff are friendly, the hotel is steps away from good restaurants and ice creams, the terrace is vine covered and cool with dappled shade. The thermal pool is interesting and the sea-water swimming pool is great in May. ( It might be too warm in the height of the summer but then I would avoid Ischia in the height of the season as I understand it gets very busy.) There isn't much of a beach nearby but the round island buses are regular and frequent so you can explore other bits of the island. We only stayed a couple of days at the end of an excellent visit to Naples, but would happily go back again and for longer.

Room tip: There are only a few rooms with sea views but the non-sea facing rooms are fine too

A great location, excellent service, delicious food, friendly staff. I did miss Tommy this year, he was always so very approachable and very friendly. Would love to see him back! This is my favorite affordable hotel in Ischia. Looking forward to next year!
