Customer service - 5 stars - worked with us and were very helpful
Bathrooms - 3 stars - Dead gnats all over the sink - do that many really die in one day?
Camp roads - 0 stars - ruts, trees, tree stumps, narrow, winding,
Camp sites - 2 stars- not level, small, marked but couldn't tell where to park
Lake/pond - 1 star - small, dirty looking
Location - 3 star - close to the Blue Ridge Parkway
We came off of the Blue Ridge Parkway on Rte 56. This road is steep and winding. It's fine just use your lower gear and go slow. Check in is at the camp store that is across the street from the campground. That all went very smooth. Next we crossed the street and entered the campground. Our first thought was wow they need to put some gravel in here to fill all the potholes or maybe this is their way of keeping the speed down. The roads were very narrow, winding, and full of trees and tree trunks on the sides. It was quite an effort to get down some of the streets. I had to get out of the truck to make sure we weren't going to hit a tree with the trailer. Once we found our site, which was a chore, we tried to level our trailer. After trying for about 45 minutes, we drove (still hooked up) back to the check-in and let the young lady know that we couldn't get into that site. She worked with us to find one that worked and called the camp host to meet us there. This site worked much better. There was basically no one at this campground. However, if there were I can imagine that the campers would be very close to each other. There are a few trailers that looked like they are permanently parked and are run down and moss covered. I wanted to stay at Sherando Lake but that was full so this was my second choice. I would not make this a first choice camp ground.

Thank you for your recent review. We value our customers' opinions and appreciate your feedback. Our mission is to provide a natural, rustic setting for our guests. Our campground has many trees and we make every effort to save those trees for the benefit of our guests. Ninety-five percent of our sites are shaded and we do recognize that this makes it more difficult to maneuver in the main body of the campground. While our bath house is cleaned frequently, small insects do accumulate inside due to lights left on overnight for the safety of guests. Major roadway repairs, which were planned for the opening of our 2017 season in April were delayed due to wet weather. These repairs are now underway and will be completed by the end of August. Our four acre lake is fed from natural mountain springs and can appear dark due to the presence of natural organic material. Again, we appreciate your feedback and encourage you to reconsider a visit with us in the future.

I've been taking my kids camping for 10 years (they're growing out of it, but not me), and this is one of two campgrounds I keep returning to, the other being Douthat State Park.

Montebello is in a valley in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and as such, is generally cooler than the localities around it. The road from I-81 is twisty, which doesn't bother me, but if I had an RV, I'd probably come from the Lynchburg side.

It's quiet, the tent sites are nice and the bath house is generally kept in good order. The campground store is great. It doesn't carry beer or booze, so make sure you have that already if you want it.

If you want swimming pools, Wi-Fi, game rooms, golf cart rentals and people dressed up like cartoon characters, this isn't your place. If you want to relax and enjoy the quiet, read a book during the day, pick up your rod and go fishing in the big pond when you get bored, go to the small pond in the evening to catch your supper and cook it over campfire coals, this place is for you. The trout pond is a great place to try out new flies and rods.

It's only a few miles from Crabtree Falls, but for some reason I've never been there. Still, you're within reasonable driving distance of Waynesboro, Lexington, Natural Bridge and even Charlottesville.

This is a delightful place to spend some quiet time. The cabin we stayed in was one of the best. Rustic but clean and cozy. There is a loft bedroom that is great for a young family but not so good if you have bad knees! Great porch for sitting and a fire pit and grill.

Room tip: If you're looking for luxury don't go here but if you want a wonderful quiet and peaceful time, this is the spot for you.

There's nothing wrong with this campground; the bathrooms were fairly clean considering it was Labor Day weekend, the sites were nice, the staff was friendly, and there's a small lake ideal for kids fishing. We were able to get a small primitive camp site just a week before Labor Day, and we had a very nice time. I think it's a good stopping off point if you're going to be exploring the George Washington National Forest, Lexington Area, Maury River or doing some hikes in the Mount Pleasant Recreation Area. There's no cell reception at all, which was nice, the only problem being that you have to rely completely on maps or sense of direction (which I don't have) so I got lost quite a bit trying to get to different places we visited. The campground is very rural and located in a very scenic area.
