This is a great family restaurant with wonderful Tex-Mex food. While the decor is a bit weird with puppets hanging from the ceiling, the food is always good. We love the quesadillas, taco salad, fajitas, shrimp tacos (my fave), the Emily plate, the burritos (which are huge) and everything else we’ve tried. Service is good and fast. Free chips and salsa for every customer!

Just to be clear, I live the food. However, I review businesses on many things, including:
- Food quality
- Food presentation
- Restaurant cleaniness
- Ambiance
- Customer Service
- Business practices

For me Carmelo's excels in everything, except for business practices. Unfortunately, Carmelo's is the type of restaurant where one had to be careful of the extra charges on the bill. I love the food, but hat to have to really think about what I am ordering. Following are my two experiences:

1) I went with my wife for brunch / lunch. My wife ordered a lunch plate and I ordered two breakfast tacos. The waiter asked me if she should bring chips and salsa. I said yes, thinking this is like any other Mexican place where the chips and salsa is complementary. The Chips were regular bagged chips heated up and the salsa was quite mediocre and boring. Later on, I saw a charge of $1.99 on the bill. When I asked, the owner said that it's $1.99 for chips and salsa if you order it with breaksfast. I said that first off, we were not informed that it would be extra, and then how could she assume that the chips we're ordered with breakfast tacos and not the lunch plate. She promptly removed the add-on

2) This experince was even worse. I ordered a bunch of tacos for friends and family. While waiting for the order, I did some mental math and figured the bill should be around $36 + tax. When I got the bill, it was more like $48 and change. I was shocked and asked her what the deal was. The owner told me that when she asked me if I wanted spicy tacos, she added $1 per taco + tax!!!!! What!?!? A DOLLAR for Hot sauce per taco. Again, I was not informed of the upcharge and it is not advertised on the menu

So, this for me is completely unacceptable, but a great lesson to be careful about Carmelo's

I had the soup and taco lunch. It was a great choice. The soup was generous and full of chicken and vegetables with a side of rice and Pico de gallo.

We went there based on a recommendation. The staff are very friendly and attentive. We felt very welcomed.

Unfortunately the food was disappointing. My wife's eggs were over cooked. The potatoes that came with them were a frozen brand. My cheese enchiladas were average at best. But given the low menu prices, I am not surprised. I would rather pay slightly more and have better ingredients.

There are too many good cheap Mexican restaurants in the area. We will go elsewhere in the future.
