Description: It all started back in 1967 when Sicilian born Giovanni Smecca decided to move to Galveston, Texas from Patterson, New Jersey after hearing Glen Campbell’s famous “Galveston” during a card game. Giovanni always dreamed of being a professional fisherman, so he decided to give it a shot and made the drive to Galveston. After battles of sea sickness, Giovanni quickly decided that the fish business wasn’t for him.Heartbroken, Giovanni was about to move back to New Jersey when he met Mario Bonaccorso who was trying to open a pizzeria. The two became great friends, and together, these two young Italian entrepreneurs started Mario’s Flying Pizza and brought the “pizza pie” to Galveston Island.Today, we are still family owned and operated and are considered a delightful, neighborhood restaurant with a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. We serve a wide variety of Italian cuisine and New York style pizza and strive to use fresh, seasonal, ingredients wherever possible, so come on in, sit back, relax, and enjoy a wonderful meal and a nice glass of wine at Mario’s Ristorante!

We went on a Saturday night 30 minutes before closing. There were only a few tables with guests and quite a few servers. Our waiter took a great amount of time to get us water. We asked if he had a sweet red wine and he said he did not know so we asked him to find out. He came back with a bottle that was supposed to be sweet and it was not. He never asked if we liked the wine and did not pour our glasses. It took way longer than expected to get our food. In the meantime he did not check to see if we needed anything, but a server nearby heard us and gave us water refills. The food was great, but the service was lacking.

We stopped in for lunch on a Thursday with a family group of seven. They offered a buffet but we just wanted pizzas. The service was s-l-o-w to say the least. Waiting for the pizzas to cook is understandable but just waiting for a waitress to take our order, give us extra napkins etc was unacceptable. The carnivore & margarita pizza were delicious. I would recommend Marios for the food quality but would suggest to the management to work on customer service.

After a day at the beach it's right place to go at the advice of my front desk the recommendation was to go to the 61st St. location. Good choice easy drive and the food was good. Shrimp Po boy, spaghetti and meatballs and cheese ravioli were all good. Italian chop salad was my favorite.

Very good pizza. The crust is excellent. I'd definitely get again. I ordered from the west end restaurant.

Stumbled upon Mario's several years ago and now a must every time we visit Galveston. Service excellent. Staff very courteous and attentive. This visit we did not see a favorite on the menu but asked our waiter if they could prepare- Veal Piccata - done. The Alfredo is excellent. Family oriented so don't be alarmed with the noise level.

Thank Daniel D
