I have to start by apologizing to Mike & Cynthia for my late update on our 4th stay at the Iron Horse Inn.
With seven grown kids and way to many grand children getting ready for another school year is our excuse.
When we started this Journey four years ago Eleanor was very unsure about a bike rally, but she did the research for accommodation and suggested the Iron Horse Inn as a very attractive location not in the heart of the rally.
There is a very good reason why after raising seven kids and 22 years together we still look to each others judgement in specific fields, because if i had picked the first year we would not have gone back - that i am sure of.
We are not world travellers to any great extent but we do know great when we experience it. A good portion of our lives and my 61 years have been taking our kids in our RV to multiple location so they experience the good in people.
Well although the kids were not with us we hit gold the very first time - kind of like winning the lottery in an off the wall first time there pick.
After our first one week stay the wife booked two weeks the next year before we left and it will remain that way until i can't hold the bike up anymore - even then the wife has a trike so it probably will be extended if i understand her & my joint passion for the experience.
We have met and been able to reconnect with such warm and wonderful friends, year in and year out that the list of those people just keeps growing largely because of the warmth from owners, staff, and the Deadwood community at large.
The Iron Horse Inn brings you back to a time and place where side arms were the norm and people were judged on their word - nothing else.
Mike & Cynthia make it such a wonderful launching pad for all the traditional area rides and their true and genuine care when you leave on a ride and the heart felt concern until you return.
We ride out of Okotok's, Alberta, Canada. just South Of Calgary (Flames) Alberta. our first two trips were from Sherwood Park, just out of Edmonton (Oilers) Alberta. which amounts to a minimum two day ride if we want but have relaxed the ride as we grow more in tune with the rally goers pre or post options.
You can take this to the bank - if you need additional insight please call Mike, he has lived in Lead/Deadwood his whole life and has been around the block more times than the ice cream truck like me - we are the same age by months 41 and holding if you need to guess at where we would like to be- not.
Become our friends next year - don't be shy, it almost cost the wife and I the very best experience of our lives other than Grand Children's births to date = we don't have to feed, cloth, educate, or keep them anymore when they are out of sort's = usually our doing with sugar overload.
From our hearts to yours who are reading this we are not being and could never be paid for this review - they are really family and will remain that until we can't do the trip anymore.
Mike book us for the next 20 years - i am the optimist and she is much younger - plus owns her own Trike so we are good for the bookings.

Sorry again for the late review passed onto you two, but we have talked and you understand - stay safe - be good & stay healthy until we can visit you in our second home for a little recap of life - next summer.

Rod & Eleanor

Room tip: please call Mike for many more details - you won't be disappointed

Thank you for your nice review, and for being our repeat guest. A great thing about owning a small hotel is getting to know our guests. We try to follow my father's old saying that "nobody leaves here a stranger." The best thing about owning a small hotel is when that guest becomes a friend, and we treasure your friendship. We look forward to seeing you again for the 2018 edition of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, but hopefully sooner than that!

Thanks again Iron Horse Inn for making our annual Sturgis trip a very memorable occasion! We decided to upgrade our room choice for this year and couldn't have been happier! We had a beautiful room with great views and plenty of room to move around! We get our best sleep of the year on your extremely comfortable mattresses!! The very best thing about the Iron Horse though is the staff and owners we truly feel like family. Another added bonus is due to the small size of the hotel we have gotten to meet other guest staying at the same time and have made lifelong friendships! If you are looking for a comfortable clean historical place to stay that's close to all the things Deadwood has to offer we highly recommend the Iron Horse Inn!l

Thank you for your kind words, and for being our repeat guest. One of the nice things about owning a small hotel is getting to know our guests, and often friendships evolve. We get a lot of return customers, and our Sturgis Rally Crew is a reunion that we look forward to each year. I will pass along your compliments to our staff. I hope to see you again soon!

All in all, this is a great little hotel. It's location is the best aspect, it's located right in the middle of downtown Deadwood, within easy walking distance of almost everything in town. It's a Victorian style building, and the rooms preserve that style, which I found to be historic and charming. This is not your typical budget hotel room, ours had plenty of space, with a ceiling fan and pull down drapes.

The room was clean, except perhaps they forgot to clear the tabled of the previous guests stuff. There was a half full bottle of Coke and some coupons on the table when we got there, but I was willing to overlook that because the rest of the room was clean and we had a nice stay. Also, they didn't offer any drinks or anything when you gambled in their casino. I had to order a drink at the bar and it was very expensive.

Like I said in the title location is key and this is a great spot if you are into experiencing a little history and don't mind something a little different.

Thank you for your kind words, and for being our guest. I am glad that you appreciated our convenient location downtown, and that you found our historic hotel to be charming. Our rooms do vary in size but we feel we have a room to fit everyone's taste and budget. We do offer complimentary tap beer, soda, and coffee to our gamblers, and our bottled beer, wine, and well cocktails are priced at just $3. Almost all other "call" liquor drinks are $4.

We hope that you will visit us again in the future!

I will say that the staff is friendly and extremely helpful. This inn brings you back to what things were like maybe in the 70's. The linens and carpet are a bit old, rooms are very small, but housecleaning is well done. Not a lot of parking. One bummer was that we arrived the day before a parade. I wish the staff told us because when we went to leave on an outing the next day, the police told us we couldn't drive out of the city until the parade was over... 2 hours!

Thank you for being our guest, and for your nice review. We take pride in many of our "old school" ways, including our customer service. I will pass along your compliments to our staff, they strive to be friendly and extremely helpful to our guests. Our building was constructed in 1898, and our rooms do vary in size. The smaller rooms have one full size bed and are priced for those on a tight budget. For a slightly higher rate a larger room with a queen or king bed is often available. We have a historic room for every taste and budget! While not large, our adjacent parking lot is free, and contains a space for each guest. I am sorry that you got caught up in the Day's of '76 parade, but I hope that you viewed it as long as you were still in town anyway. It is truly a great historic event that our town hosts each year. We hope that you will visit us again!

Quaint hotel with clean, small rooms, but what would you expect for that time period if a building. The staff personality was hit or miss, if you got DeeDee or the bartender, things were great, anyone else was an adventure in politeness and effort. The restaurant at the base of the hotel took 2 hrs to serve us and the staff was less then polite, while they are not part of the hotel they are in the same building and do affect the overall vibe

Thank you for being our guest, and for taking the time to give us a review. Our rooms do vary in size due to the historic nature of our property. Our building was constructed in 1898 and re-purposed for it's present hotel use in the late 1990's. That said, we do have a clean and comfortable room for every budget! While the restaurant is operated by others, they do serve a great meal at a reasonable cost, and are always near the top of TripAdvisor's ranking. During special events like the Days of '76 meals can be "backed up," but they will typically let the customer know the wait time for their meal. We hope that you will visit us again in the future.
