While meandering in and out of downtown Deadwood souvenir shops, we happened upon Deadwood Distilling Company, which advertises "Free Moonshine Tasting" on a sign in the window. A woman inside beckoned us with a wave, and we decided to check it out.
Deadwood Distilling makes its moonshine on site. The distillery is in a large room next to the retail shop, and you can watch if something is brewing during your visit.
At two tasting counters, eight jars of moonshine are displayed, and visitors may sample them all. We tried apple pie, blackberry, strawberry and peach. You can also taste red hot cinnamon, vanilla, coffee flavor, or plain apple.
All four that we tried were surprisingly good. Hubby is a fan of peach anything, so we decided to bring a jar home. A large mason jar container of moonshine is $25. It tastes a little like peach schnapps, but not nearly as sweet and far more potent. Moonshine is 70 proof.
The retail shop also sells local jams, honeys, T-shirts, miscellaneous souvenirs. Home distilled moonshine is a most apt souvenir of our stay in Deadwood.
