Owner description: Perched on a rock above a gushing waterfall, this historic house was built for a Pittsburgh family by architect Frank Lloyd Wright in the 1930s, ingeniously designed to blend harmoniously into the tranquil and beautiful woods around it.

West Pennsylvania Conservancy does a wonderful job in presenting this acclaimed house and the dual role in its development of Frank Lloyd Wright and the Kaufman family of Pittsburgh. The exhibits tell the story of the previous proprietors of recreational facilities in the Bear Run area and how the Kaufman family fell in love with the terrain. The WPC bring groups through the house and skillfully weave in Wright’s masterful achievement in harmoniously combining technology with the environment. Our tour guide Mitchell L was immensely informative and responded helpfully to all questions.

Enjoyed the design of the house and servant quarters. The history of the grounds and the family very interesting. Truest dalling water right at the house.

This was our second visit to Fallingwater. We left from Chapel Hill NC and spent a couple of days in D.C.
Fallingwater is an easy 3.5 hour drive from D.C. We spent the night in Uniontown ( see my review of the Holiday Inn Express). If you are traveling in July or August buy your tickets in advance. Some times they may not be available. Arrive about 30 minutes or so early for your tour. That will allow you to tour a small gallery and the gift shop that is located at the area where the tour begins. The area around the house is professionally landscaped. You feel like you are worlds away from any big cities. The tour guides are top notch and know a lot of details.

If you're a lover of architecture and appreciate history, this is a must see. Fallingwater is a bit remote but well worth the effort of getting there. The setting is magical and the house itself is obviously a masterpiece! It is complete with original furnishings that are not kept behind glass walls. Tour guides take you through the home and provide you with the story behind the Kauffman’s commissioning of the the house and Wright’s design genius. Fascinating stuff, don't miss out! Keep in mind, no pictures are allowed inside the house.

Fallingwater is a must-see for anyone interested in Frank Lloyd Wright and/or American architecture. The tour guide provided an excellent introduction to the main house and guest house, describing the various architectural features. One criticism was that more should have been said about other interesting aspects of the house. For instance, the guide pointed out a Diego Rivera painting as we passed by it in one hallway, and mentioned that another Rivera work was in a room we had already toured. I would love to have had that work indicated while we were in the room with the opportunity to see it. Also, instead of just describing this one house, it would help to start with an introduction to Wright, especially for the benefit of those who are not broadly familiar with his work. If I knew nothing about Wright before visiting Fallingwater, I would have left knowing virtually nothing else about him other than his design for this amazing structure.
