With tweaking could be a 4*

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 20 Apr 2024
The service was excellent from the (mainly young) staff and the food good,..white tablecloths and with sprigs of fresh flowers, which is lovely.

The spacious bathroom looked newly renovated and stocked with convenient items..the tea making station was well stocked too. WiFi is free.

The hotel has a lovely garden but beware of bird droppings if parking in the free car park - spaces can be reserved in advance at the front of hotel.

The room was roomy and very comfortable for a double + single bed option, but looked shabby (carpet, ceiling tiles) - no wow factor - plus the tv kept cutting out (staff could do nothing about it) and the radiator controls did not work..so the convector heater and extra blanket (already supplied..as were a good hair dryer and fan) were welcome (as the duvet was thin)

The general appearance of the lounge, reception and corridors looked tired - the sofas, armchair appearing drab & uninviting.

With a bit of interior design skill & redecoration, this hotel could easily contend as an unique 4*..especially as it has a unique heritage.

Would recommend!

GOOD: Breakfast was well cooked, hot and appetising. Room (at the back) was nice and quiet. Room rates significantly better at Lysses than at comparable pubs and inns around the area. All the staff were friendly, polite and helpful. Having free parking on site is an advantage over other sites.

NOT SO: Coffee at breakfast was weak and tasteless, and the coffee pot could have been warmer as the coffee itself was barely warm enough to drink. The instant coffee in the room was a better option. In the room (23), the bedding and towels were clean but had seen better days, and the duvet was too small for a double bed.

Room tip: Rooms at the back are quiet.

We have often had meals at this hotel , and always found the experience to be excellent. This evening we had dinner , all food delicious and well presented.
Staff friendly , pleasant, and food arrived promptly. Lovely to have tablecloths , flowers and a candle too.

Basically rooms were underwhelming, tired and grubby. Beds and duvets smelt really 'beddy'. Must be overdue for a wash. Very off putting. Toilet floor sticky, tv remote thick with grime. Breakfast probably could have been nice, but ordered scrambled eggs and toast with bacon. Very undercooked sloppy eggs turned up and sat congealing on the plate with flashed in the pan bacon. Eventually had to ask for the toast, but by then the rest was cold. Decided to give the cooked a miss and just had cold toast. However, the staff are very nice and friendly.
If the rest of the place was of the standard of the dining room curtains, it could be very nice, but it has a long way to go to be considered a good hotel.

Food great, staff very good, hotel rooms very tired.
Rooms look like not changed since 1970s. Very small bed for a double.
Can't fault food or staff though. Some money spent on refurbishment is needed.
Evening meal and breakfast good. Just everything else very dated.
