We are staying in Grasmere and wanted to visit the western fells particularly to take a ride on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway so we followed the sat nav out of Grasmere which took us eventually to Hardknott and Wrynose Pass. The lower part of the journey was challenging enough so suffice to say that when we got to the 'real climb' I can only describe it as the most difficult and most scariest drive ever! I had opted to drive that day and at 65 I consider myself an experienced driver but I had to concentrate very hard whilst negotiating very steep hairpin bends whilst my poor husband gripped his seat and (commendably) said very little. We consider ourselves lucky not to have met another car coming in the opposite direction on the steepest parts. The views of course are breathtaking but my advice is to not take your eyes off the task in hand as a momentary lack in concentration could result in danger. Of course when we got down to the lower ground, the feeling of exhilaration at having driven the steepest climb in England completely overrode the butt clenching moments of earlier. Feel the fear and do it anyway!
