So this is the main reason I came to Mexico City. I had to see the Pyramid of the Sun. We booked a tour on Viator to make this excursion happen. It was cheap ($37 US) and detailed. You don’t need a guide to tour these ruins, but it sure does help. There is a lot of background information that you can get from your guide that isn’t on the info signs throughout the Zone. There are bathrooms, a gift shop and a place to get some water if you need. Wear comfortable walking shoes and NO sandals!!! A hat is nice, but I didn’t wear one and was fine. Go early, the crowds get crazy around 11 am. Hiking the pyramids are definitely not anything you want to do with impatient people behind you.

If you cannot go to any other mesoamerican site, you have to go here at least once, and spend at least 8 hours there!

We went to these pyramids with two other couples who had some knowledge of the history and facts related. It is an amazing complex of ancient pyramids, palaces and other buildings of that Aztec era. Having been to other pyramids, we were surprised and pleased to learn that we could climb the stairs to the top of the "Sun". Be forewarned that these steps are extremely steep but the climb is worth the reward. Also beware that you are expending a lot of energy going up the stairs and you are at altitude so the effort needed is more than at sea level.
On the other pyramid called the "Moon", we were allowed to climb to roughly the halfway point. Be prepared for many photo opportunities.
The entry fee was very cheap, something in the area of $2.50 USD and there wasn't a line on a day with perfect weather. When the sun shines. remember you are closer to the sun (no pun) and the sun is very strong (sunscreen is recommended).
There is a great restaurant nearby that is in a cave, it is called La Gruta and is worth a visit. The food is so so and the beer is nice and cold!
One further note, we did not have a guide and we left with many questions. If you really want to understand the Aztecs and the pyramids, We would highly recommend a guided tour with an archeological expert, available here on Trip Advisor.

We arranged a tour through Royal Cars & Tours, so they provided transportation & a guide. We purposely started early to avoid the crowds & the heat. Our guide had us start at the 3rd gate, closest to the Pyramid of the Moon. He took us through the ruins here and then let us have plenty of time to finish up on our own. Our guide & driver met us near Gate 1 awhile later. This worked out really well. As others have stated, this place is amazing! It is hard to comprehend how old it is, and how little we know about the people who built it. Our guide told us that only about 10% of the ruins have been excavated. Yes, there are vendors here. Don’t let them bother you. Our kids actually had been wanting a souvenir from Mexico, and this was the perfect place to get something reasonably nice (not plastic junk or another T-shirt) for a decent price. In total, we probably spent about 3 hours here. I would suggest a bottle of water for everyone, sunscreen & hats. We also used restrooms near Gate 1 & 3. If you climb the pyramids, take your time & watch your step! It’s very, very steep!

The pyramids themselves were incredible. We went Labor Day weekend 2018 and really enjoyed a half day at the ruins. We spent about 2.5 hours walking around the land and up/down various pyramids. We arrived at 9:15AM on a Saturday and the crowds were not bad then. We were able to easily climb Pyramide del Sol. When we were leaving around 11:45AM the park was very crowded and it was very hot.

In terms of transportation to and from the pyramids. We took the advice of many others and took an Uber from Mexico City to the ruins. The Uber there was 400 pesos. We asked our Uber drive if he would wait for us while we toured the pyramids and then drive us back to Mexico City. He said he would but asked that we give him 400 pesos to wait and then we would owe him 200 pesos for the ride home. We reluctantly agreed which was a terrible idea.

When it was time to leave, we pulled up the uber app to call him and we realized he never ended our original ride. So the ride to the ruins went from 400 pesos to 750 pesos (on top of the cash we gave him to wait). We called him and he said he was going to pick us up but never showed up. Thankfully, we had cell service and called an uber back to Mexico City for 350 pesos.

Moral of the story, don't pay an uber to wait. We had two phones with us (one Sprint and one Verizon) and both phones had service in the pyramids. It is spotty but if you walk around you can get it to work. The restaurant inside the cave (La Gruta) apparently has wifi also but we did not attempt this. A one way Uber from Mexico City should cost ~400 pesos (800 pesos round trip).
