PROS: Super-friendly staff, affordable rates when extra amenities are working; close to Theodore Roosevelt National Park (TRNP); free breakfast (but get there early); breakfast options include: hot eggs & protein (mostly turkey sausage or ham), oatmeal & toppings, waffles & maple syrup, milk & cereal, toast, bagels, muffins, yogurt, fresh fruit, juice and coffee; fully stocked kitchen with dishware, cookware, utensils, large fridge, microwave and dishwasher; Netflix access (sign-in required) or HBO Go access (no sign-in required)

CONS: Spa/hot tub availability is hit-or-miss; noisy generator (if your room is nearby); terrifying elevator shimmy; minor cleanliness issues with low gross-out factor: dusty bathroom fan, a little dirt and a hair or two in the tub, bit of dust collected in some corners of the room; if amenities are inaccessible, the cost seems a bit high given other cheaper hotel options in Dickinson

FIRST VISIT
My wife and I stayed at TownePlace Suites twice this year--once for a Memorial weekend getaway and again on the way home from a lengthy roadtrip in July. We were pleasantly surprised during our first visit because rates were reasonable given the holiday weekend, free breakfast was adequate (not the donut/muffin/bagel "continental" breakfast of days past!), and it's an easy drive to TRNP. We chose Dickinson because Medora hotels are insanely overpriced, and the drive between the two towns is quite beautiful. After a day of walking in Medora and TRNP, the spa/hot tub was a welcome treat (and not very busy between 10 and 11 pm--at one point we even had the hot tub and pool all to ourselves). The entire staff was incredible, except for one young woman working front desk overnight. She wasn't unfriendly, she was just a stark contrast from everyone else, especially the breakfast staff: weekend warrior Joelyn (sorry if I spelled her name wrong) who let me borrow a tray to bring up breakfast for my wife (who likes to sleep); Justin told us about his favorite fishing spots; and Tammy made waffles for another guest who had a wrist brace without even being asked to do so. These were just three examples of staff going out of their way to insure a pleasant stay. The only real criticisms I had at that time were that the edge molding on one wall was separating (which they fixed immediately), minor cleanliness concerns, and the tub was extremely slippery (maybe it was the soft water, the Paul Mitchell toiletries or how they cleaned the tub, but we just used a hand towel as a shower mat).

SECOND VISIT
After our stellar first visit, it was a no-brainer for us to stay again July 28-29 while on our way home from our Alberta/Montana roadtrip. We were glad to see the rubber bathroom mat (means they take guest feedback to heart). The room was clean, staff was pleasant, and we were happy to get a room on fourth floor so that we didn't have to listen to heavy-footed steppers late in the evening or early in the morning. But the rest of our second stay didn't live up to the first: elevator #1 had a terrifying shimmy, the air conditioner was excessively loud, and the spa/hot tub was out-of-order. Since the spa/hot tub was the deciding factor over choosing somewhere else cheaper, this was the last straw. Considering this was the second consecutive Marriott property on our trip where the spa/hot tub wasn't working (the other one was SpringHill Suites in Great Falls, Montana), I would've liked a better response than a dismissive oh-well attitude. The hotel manager herself checked us out of our room the next morning (I knew it was her from the pleasant interactions we had during our first visit), and it was quite telling in the way she didn't ask us how our stay was (like she was afraid of opening Pandora's box). These two incidents, unfortunately, have us rethinking our Marriott loyalty as they're not worth the extra money for non-working amenities. If extras are no big deal to you, you'll still find TownePlace Suites a comfortably average stay as it's definitely not a sleazy, rat-trap hotel. But if there is a particular amenity you're banking on (hot tub, fitness center, pool, etc), then call ahead or have a back-up option.

Room Tip: 4th floor away from outside generator is quieter

We arrived in Dickinson after a long day of driving and we're pleased to find that Townplace is a clean, new, modern hotel with friendly, knowledgable, and efficient staff. The rooms have small kitchens with refrigerator which is great for a road-trip. Rooms come with breakfast, not brilliant, but plenty to get us back on the road.

We stayed here so we could spend time exploring the Theodore Roosevelt Nation Park. It’s split into two sections so it requires more time to see properly.
As platinum travelers, the hotel gave us a larger room as an upgrade and my wife was in heaven. Made life good for me . Room was very comfortable. Clean and well equipped. Our park days were rewarded with a comfortable large room and friendly kind and polite staff welcome backs!! All hotels should be operated this well. (They are new and a little understaffed. Mentioned only so you might be prepared. They worked hard to make up for it and we were very pleased.)

Oh yeah, best guest laundry ever. And entering our fourth week on the road, that was great.

Excellent stay here. I am a Marriott Platinum traveler and was very impressed with the quality and friendliness of the staff. Great breakfast area, by far the cleanest and most helpful kitchen staff in any Townplace or Residence inn anywhere in the USA. The staff at breakfast asked us several times if we were happy and satisfied with breakfast. With many kids traveling, this was very well received. Also this hotel has very reasonable pricing and Dog Friendly too!

We needed a place to stay en route home (SD) after a day in Theodore Roosevelt NP, and found rates in Medora (closer) to be insane; so we drove another 20 minutes down I-94 and I'm so glad we did. We got in late and left early from a one night stay, but had a great experience while we were there.

The hotel is clearly new-ish (I assume, like most of this area, a bi-product of the oil boom a few years back) and well-maintained. The common spaces and room were both clean and well organized. The room (2Q) was a very generous size, more like a small apartment-size (though only one room) with a full closet, full kitchen, full table, and some sitting space. The bathroom is quite large, too. Either the walls were thick or the clientele quiet b/c we didn't hear a peep all night. Light pollution was a non-issue (due to good location, good curtains, and quite frankly, it's ND).

The breakfast was low-key, but a decent enough selection (and free) and I saw many families enjoying the pool. More than enough parking (for cars, boats, trailers, RVs, etc.) and very easy to get to off the main interstate. Located near a walmart (for last minute things you forgot), a small mall, and plenty of dining options.

Definitely a great hotel (at a fantastic price) to end our trip at.
