Owner description: A spectacular lookout point providing breathtaking views of the Elbe River and the surrounding countryside.

You cannot miss that point in Saxon Switzerland. For the families with smaller children I recommend to come by car from the North and park the car close to the point (300 m only). For the other tourists I recommend to take he pass from the river (you need to use ferry boat from the left bank of Elbe). Then you enjoy your hiking to Bastei formation with the famous bridge. Highly recommend to visit ruins of Neurathen to get more views to the bridge or to the natural amphitheatre of that sand rock paradise bellow.

Very picturesque bridge surrounded by sandstone, vould probably be at its best at sunset but we were there at midday and was still nice, offering some good views of the surrounding area and Elbe river. The stairs can be a bit taxing on a hot summer day.

We went to the Bastei on 29 May 2018.
We drove from Leipzig and followed the road signs to Dresden then Pirna and then Bastei. There are two car parks. The second was at a higher level and closer to the attraction. However we were not allowed to park our car at the higher level car park. We had to park at the first car park and then take the bus from the stop just outside the car park. The bus fare was 1.5 Euro per person return trip.

This place surely is worth a visit despite the horrendous crowds that pile up every day, especially in the summer. We arrived mid morning, parking was still alright, though be prepared that everything will cost you something. A short 10 minute walk from the parking lot takes the visitor to the beginning of many steps, so be prepared, especially if you’re a bit out of shape. However, what awaits are wonderful views of sandstone pillars, the icon and namesake of this region. As in medieval times, the bridge that crosses through the pillars can be a battleground of tourists from around the globe so bring your patience pills. Beyond, one can enter an additional tourist trap for several euros though the views may be worth it. We skipped it. Nevertheless, some other (free) viewpoints lie ahead if you’re willing to go up and down the path of many steps. We opted to leave the crowd and went back to the car. Coming early or late in the day and, of course, off season, is probably the best. Side note: for some really awesome hiking, continue to Bad Schandau, head into the Kirnitzschtal for a few miles, park in one of several parking areas (€), and hike to the Carolafelsen (Carola Rocks). Many trail options of various difficulty and grand views once at the top. No matter what, this area looks like Utah but covered in lush vegetation. It is worth your time despite any crowds that you may discover.
