Unfortunately, the first few few minutes set the negative tone of our visit. We were celebrating our Anniversary and had a 6:30pm reservation. We arrived at 6:05, so we went into the bar. We sat at a table and a server brought us a menu. We stated we had a reservation, and would just be having a cocktail. She said okay, left us to review the menu, and she never came back. HORRIBLE service! We sat there for 10 more minutes when another server asked us if someone had taken our order. I said no. She said our server would be right with us. Again, she never came, although she did walk by a couple of times servicing other guests. At 6:30, the hostess came to get us for our table. She led us through the main dining area to an adjacent room without nearly the atmosphere as the main dining are. As it was our Anniversary, and early, I would have thought we would get a nice table. But no, she took us to a horrendous table in, literally, a tiny corner behind a glass partition/door. My chair was up against the wall in the corner, and my husbands car was up against the partition/door. I saw a card on the table, and the table sprinkled with celebratory confetti, but I really should have spoken up and told the hostess that the table was not at all okay. In fact, the table looks like it was just stuck there. It should not be a table in a high end restaurant that anyone should be seated at.
Then the servers assistant came to the table. The restaurant was loud and we had a very difficult time hearing him as he spoke so softly. The server was nice, but didn't offer any information about the menu and it's offerings.
Their bread basket was very nice and offered a variety of good bread. I ordered a cup of french onion soup....I'd give it 4/5 stars. We both ordered the Dry Aged New York au Poivre with Courvoisier Cream. The steak was very good, but way too heavy on the pepper! Unless you just want to taste only pepper, either don't order this steak, or tell them to put very little on. We literally scraped it off, ending up with about a tablespoon of pepper off the steak, and still had enough pepper on the meat. Unfortunately, this also removed the good Courvoiser Cream sauce. You can do au Poivre without it being the main attraction. This ruined the wonderful steak. I'd give the steak a 2/5 stars. The Lobster Mac 'N Cheese was very good. I'd give it 4/5 stars. The two small celebratory desserts were excellent. I couple bite Creme Brule'e Cheesecake and Espresso Chocolate Cake were excellent. I'd give them a 5/5. I had two Bohemian cocktails, and my husband had a In Fashion. They were very good. I'd give them a 5/5.
As far as service, unlike many fine dining restaurants, like Fleming's, they never used a crumb catcher on the table. Also, our water glasses stayed empty several times, and one time I had to ask for more. The service was not up to the level of a fine dining experience. And not close to the experience we had at Fleming's for Valentine's Day. Both were $200.00 dinners. Also, the atmosphere, partly due to the crammed in tables, was not nearly as nice at Capital as it is at Fleming's. And the parking reminded me of why we don't venture into urban North Hills.
I can't say we will ever go back to Capital as Fleming's is closer to home, has better service, better menu offerings, is more relaxed and truly feels like a fine dining restaurant......and excellent food.
