I’ve recently become interested in raptors thanks to webcams featuring Eagles and Ospreys, so thought it would be good to check out the Raptor Center. I had purchased tickets for the flight show, but the show owl had other plans and was not available the Sunday I visited. A bit disappointing at first, but we were lucky enough to be at the eagle exhibit when the errant owl (Dumbledore) decided to come back to the gloved hand that fed him! It was actually great to see the owl high in a tree, then fly to a couple of close tree limbs before settling on the trainer’s glove.

All of the birds are beautiful.Understandably some are a bit shy and hang out toward the back of their enclosure, but you would be, too if you were in the cage with people gawking at you all day long! We spent a couple of hours walking to all of the exhibits. They’re all outdoors, but it’s an easy stroll and often shaded. There are plenty of benches to rest on if needed, or you just want to watch a bird. I think it’s unusual, but there were no docents on the trail the Sunday we were there. It would have been nice to have a few experts placed around the exhibits to talk to about the birds, but it didn’t detract from the experience.

It’s definitely worth a visit.

The Raptor Center is a great place to enjoy nature and learn about the birds. It is very large with well-maintained walkways in a wooded area. There are often volunteer docents with exhibits on the trails. Flight shows on weekends are a real treat. There are numerous activities and events many of them giving you close up access to the birds. You can even book a birthday party or participate in a raptor release. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend for all ages.

While I understand the mission of the Raptor Center, the admission price is somewhat steep considering what you get. A family of four is $40. The map they provide is tough to follow and the large maps posted around the place have no "You are here." You walk in the nice cool woods and come upon cages with the raptors. Many are hiding in the corners and some are empty. I know they cannot do anything about that, but maybe add some subtle lights. The walkways have some erosion damage which should be fixed. One place, two volunteers had a demonstration of feathers. Otherwise the stages were empty. They did try to sell us a membership, but we do not live close. Maybe they should have a family fee or find ways to be more affordable. Then increase revenue via donations, grants and memberships. I would not recommend this place. And the gift shop had very little to buy, shirts were pricey and many empty displays.

So sorry that your visit wasn't what you had hoped. Unfortunately, you visited on a day when programming had to be cancelled because of a resident bird issue - otherwise you would have enjoyed a free flight show and other offerings. Our pricing is similar to what you would pay for a movie, but we will certainly take your suggestion under advisement to have a family package price. We are supporting the hospital facility with your admission that treats almost 1,000 birds a year with a great success rate of release.

Stay tuned! We're gearing up to build a new center this fall that is ADA accessible with lots of new interactive spaces, so come back in a year or so and see what we've got going on.

My son and I enjoyed a lovely morning here as last bit of fun before school starts. The exhibits are located outside amongst lots of shade trees. They have a great variety of different birds of prey most of the rescues that cannot live in the wild. Very friendly staff eager to answer any questions you have.
