I visited on a foggy Saturday morning. Arrived at the parking area at 7am, with basically nobody else around. By the time my hiking took me by the falls, around 9am, I had seen less than 10 people, and had the viewing platform to myself. However, I must have passed 50+ between the falls and the parking lot who were heading into the woods. Get here early and beat the crowd. The falls loop is tough for those who aren’t used to climbing hills/stairs. But it is worth it for me, especially with no crowd in the early morning.
Looking for your first hike?. For a beginner it was rough because of the steps but worth it. It’s beautiful no matter when you go!
Not wild about the trail after two days of rain, but falls were spectacular.
The trail was covered with wet leaves, and was a bit muddy in places, but luckily you can take a different path back to the parking lot.
Falls spray lots of water
This is a beautiful place with lots of places to fish or play in the river. Its very kid and animal friendly. I would recommend taking the whole family here for a wonderful day outside surrounded by some of the most fabulous nature. Great place for a picnic and the waterfall is gorgeous.
My wife and I went to High Shoals Falls last weekend. The park itself is beautiful. However, the trail going up to the falls is poorly maintained and one can seriously hurt themselves. At one point, you need to climb up rocks that are very uneven so your footing is not secure. This hike is labeled as " Easy to Moderate" and only 1.1 miles to the falls. It was longer and also steep. They really should have ropes with knots so that people can have a better grip. It is a nice park overall....
We did the High Shoals Falls Loop Trail. It was classified as a strenuous 2.7 mile hike. The trail begins at the Jacob Fork parking lot which is a mile or so beyond the South Mountain State Park office. It’s a really nice office by the way with clean restrooms. The hike goes up several steep steps to the top of the Falls. Once you reach the top it’s basically a gradual descend back to the parking area. There are few moments where the decline bothered the knees, but for the most part it was fine. Nature surrounds you as you hike the trail. Really beautiful! There were several dogs on the trail, and all seemed to do fine!
