Reliable and good value

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 10 May 2015
I stayed here three times ten years ago, whilst buying a house in the town. The bedrooms are a little old fashioned, but we discovered a top floor room with ensuite shower which was pleasant and light. Half the price of a Carcassonne hotel where we stayed at about the same time.
Since then we've eaten there regularly. Service is good, and food is tasty. The lunch time 'menu' is superb value. Remember to book if you want to eat in the courtyard in the summer, or you'll probably be disappointed. This place is popular with locals and holiday makers.
Date of stay: October 2014
Room Tip: 2nd floor over looking the court yard.

Unpretentious, but totally good, honest food.
We were three friends, meeting for lunch, and were just too early in the season to eat 'au jardin'. No problem, indoors was just fine. We all decided to go for the 'menu du jour'. Starters of charcuterie/salads was tasty, wonderful rustic bread, replenished throughout the meal went well with the next course of deep fried broccoli tempura in a spicy tomato sauce. Main course of pork chops with chips and green beans, filled us all to the extent that no one could face dessert, opting for coffee. Our bill, with wine, was €48. Fantastic value, with gracious service and authentic ambiance.

We stayed here for two nights in later April, my last stay having been in 2006. The hotel is very comfortable, the food was really excellent and good value, and the owners were very charming and helpful. Will definitely go back.

Arriving late in the evening I was happy just to get a room and see that food was being served in their busy restaurant. However, the experience was memorable only for its mediocrity, harking back as it did to the 1950s. The meal was okay; the accommodation was bearable, the bathroom was a danger to anyone who was at all infirm (the shower tray was about a foot off the floor, which would make getting-out problematic for some) - mind you, all this was shown to me before I agreed to stay so it wasn't a surprise, but since it was getting late I compromised.

Breakfast was poor with little choice, but enlivened by a Heath Robinson-ish orange juice machine, where you squeezed your own juice - if you were really careful - a unique piece of equipment that was almost worth the stay.

A wonderful little place in a fantastic Medieval town. Greeted warmly by an old french lady who seemed to be there before I got up in the morning and still there when I was settling in for the night.
Run in a traditional old French style with old timber every where, The Bedroom was clean extremely comfortable and spacious for a double. All nice hardwood furniture well cared for with a very comfortable sleep I was all set for the following day of business. Large ensuite with bath/shower. flat screen TV in the room and free fast broadband. Downstairs there was a restaurant which had a lovely menu and seemed to have people flocking in. I didn't eat there due to other arrangements but was sorry I didn't.
A great stay in a budget hotel.

Over the last few days I have been wracking my brains to remember the name of the bathroom suite colour, popular in the 70s that was a sort of goldy yellow colour and I think it may have well been pampas. Why? Because the en suite in my room at The Commerce was just this colour which puts it at about 40 years old, probably the same age as the muck revealed between the bath and the tiles when the bath was full....... Really, really in need of a refit, although the rest of the room seemed to have been redecorated relatively recently, albeit in a colour scheme which made it very cold and unwelcoming and the cheap carpet was a long way from new. Furniture somewhat battered but the bed was comfortable and at least everything worked, except wifi.
Beautiful but well visited Mirepoix is not cheap so I suppose, as the cheapest in town, all the above
is to be expected but I was a bit underwhelmed, especially as I was the only guest and would maybe expect to be given the best room they had( I could have had a room with shower a bit cheaper). Maybe this was the best?
The staff became noticeably frosty when I chose to breakfast and dine out too, but if you visit Mirepoix you will know why - so much choice.
Would only return if I absolutely had no alternative.

Room tip: make a fuss, maybe!
