Great Value in a traditional old style small French Hotel

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 27 Aug 2014
A wonderful little place in a fantastic Medieval town. Greeted warmly by an old french lady who seemed to be there before I got up in the morning and still there when I was settling in for the night.
Run in a traditional old French style with old timber every where, The Bedroom was clean extremely comfortable and spacious for a double. All nice hardwood furniture well cared for with a very comfortable sleep I was all set for the following day of business. Large ensuite with bath/shower. flat screen TV in the room and free fast broadband. Downstairs there was a restaurant which had a lovely menu and seemed to have people flocking in. I didn't eat there due to other arrangements but was sorry I didn't.
A great stay in a budget hotel.

Over the last few days I have been wracking my brains to remember the name of the bathroom suite colour, popular in the 70s that was a sort of goldy yellow colour and I think it may have well been pampas. Why? Because the en suite in my room at The Commerce was just this colour which puts it at about 40 years old, probably the same age as the muck revealed between the bath and the tiles when the bath was full....... Really, really in need of a refit, although the rest of the room seemed to have been redecorated relatively recently, albeit in a colour scheme which made it very cold and unwelcoming and the cheap carpet was a long way from new. Furniture somewhat battered but the bed was comfortable and at least everything worked, except wifi.
Beautiful but well visited Mirepoix is not cheap so I suppose, as the cheapest in town, all the above
is to be expected but I was a bit underwhelmed, especially as I was the only guest and would maybe expect to be given the best room they had( I could have had a room with shower a bit cheaper). Maybe this was the best?
The staff became noticeably frosty when I chose to breakfast and dine out too, but if you visit Mirepoix you will know why - so much choice.
Would only return if I absolutely had no alternative.

Room tip: make a fuss, maybe!

Le Commerce is a lovely little hotel in the beautiful medieval town of Mirepoix.

It is delightfully quaint and has recently undergone improvements including new bathrooms and air conditioning.

The restaurant provides excellent food at reasonable prices and the staff are very friendly and helpful. It is possible to dine either inside or outside and there is plenty of seating capacity. I particularly liked the big old french radiators in the property, giving it a character all it's own.

The whole business is resided over by the lady who I assume is the owner. She watches everything carefully - not missing a trick - to ensure that all runs smoothly.

The rooms could be a little larger but are clean and adequate.

What makes this hotel for me is the interesting characterful building - the location - the food - and the people.

The room in this rabbit warren of a hotel was rather cramped but was clean and comfortable, with air conditioning. Mirepoix is a popular destination, and this keeps prices high. If eating in the restaurant, go à la carte - and there may be better places in the town itself.

I have stayed here twice in the last few months.
The first time they were upgrading the rooms in light of some comments and all were being repainted. Even better the second time they had converted a ground floor annex room into a room suitable for disabled people, with a specially equipped bathroom.
This is typical of the owners' desire to please. It is a Hotel of character which might not suit those who seek a modern simply functional style. You certainly get more out of it if you can chat with the friendly staff in French
It has been in the same family for generations, and has certain old fashioned values, such as the very copious traditional cooking in the restaurant rather than the fashionable small portions of Nouvelle Cuisine.
I shall be returning in a week for another stay that I hope will be as enjoyable as the last two
The weak point is the breakfast which is rather do it yourself

This is a nice family-run hotel close to Mirepoix’s main attractions. The town is well worth a visit and this is a good place to stay and eat. We had some difficulty finding the hotel due partly to Mirepoix’s one-way system but on the positive side, all the locals from whom we sought assistance were kind and helpful. Parking could also be a bit difficult as there are limited places in front of the hotel.

Our room was spacious with exposed wooden beams and a bidet (all plusses in our book). Everything was clean including the flat roof outside our window (ie no dog pooh or rubbish as reported in a previous review). We could see the cathedral spire from our window and hear the bell chiming the hours. We found this pleasant and certainly not loud enough to be disturbing. We did experience some noise from late revellers in the restaurant below but this didn’t last long enough to cause a problem.

We ate in the hotel restaurant and had a very good dinner. We sat outside under the trees and savoured our last night in the south of France. The restaurant does close at 9:00 pm (we saw people turned away very soon after this time) so don’t arrive late if you plan to eat here.
