The market gives an excellent example of the way Africa works even to these days.
The thing is most people sell the same fruit/vegetables and fish, we couldn't find any spices.

It's a nice place but I couldn't find a reason to spend more then 30-60 minutes there.

Definitely enjoyed the sights and sounds of Darajani but if you come from places with open air wet markets, then the Darajani experience is nothing new. Having said that, it is an undoubtedly good place to get spices as souvenirs. Do look out for flying bits of meat from the butchers if you're walking through the meat section!

Visited this comprehensive market with a guide from Escapade Tours arranged by the Park Hyatt hotel. It is large, authentic and overpowering with all the sights and smells. Bought some Zanzibari spices as a souvenir for home.

Being an Europeen, an African market should be very different from the one that we see in Europe. I was not disappointed. Of course, we think that is strange: fish and seafood without being on ice; meet hanging without being refrigerated; but if we think, that was the reality by the time when my grandparents were young.
It has lots of smells, lots of colors: fruit, spices, vegetables! If you like food, you will love to visit Stone Town's market.

We loved this market. You will find everything- fruits, veg, spices etc. Compared to other African and Asian markets we've visited, this one is full to the brim with produce. It's not as aggressive as other places we've been but the joy of waking through the stalls, talking to vendors, bargaining, experiencing the authentic vibe is all a must. This is where you can get great spices. For a real taste of Zanzibar, MUST see
