The garden lodge offers rooms in a traditional swahili house. The house itself is beautiful and has a nice rooftop terrace for breakfast. The rooms are spacious, with nice furniture. They are clean but not impeccable (especially the bathrooms) and the hot water rarely works. The breakfast is included and is very good. Given the prices of Zanzibar, the hotel is a good choice. The staff is friendly but of the kind that will call their non-registered driver friend when you ask them to book a taxi for you (the driver friend asking for 3 times the price of a taxi). There is wifi but only on the rooftop.

We were looking for a budget acco for just one night and Garden Lodge seemed to be a good economical choice. We were lucky to get a room facing the back so had a quiet and peaceful night. The room was small (but fit for the price paid) and was clean with an ensuite bathroom and hot water. The breakfast was decent too, nothing to rave about but as decent as they come. I would definitely consider staying there again. One amazing experience during the stay is that we got to see bush babies in the night, in the trees in the backyard. That made everything awesome!! So, all in all, ideal for folks on a budget!!! And walking distance from Forodhani

Room tip: Rooms at the back are quieter although the ones out front are not bad either since it does quieten down post 11pm.

Garden lodge is a charming place and the staff were all wonderful. My wife and I were backpacking for a month so we were always looking for budget places. Zanzibar isn't really the cheapest so $50 a night per room is pretty good. There were other cheaper places (not much cheaper though) in Stone town but they were just horrible. The room we got seemed to be really small, so I'm wondering if there are bigger rooms. Be sure to ask and see the rooms available. The breakfast was good and is included in the room's rate. The location is great, where other cafes, restaurants, and stores are walking distance. If you like walking then everything is really within reach. For example, we walked all the way to the ferry station (maybe 20 - 30 min walk).

We had this place recommended to us by a friend in Moshi and were not disappointed. The rooms are relatively clean, huge comfy beds with mosquito nets, air conditioning, and private bathroom. It was pretty cheap for the quality and we were even able to bargain our rates down once we had a friend transfer to stay with us. The location was prime- very safe and close to everything. Best of all was a fresh breakfast of fruit, eggs, toast, and coffee on the roof overlooking the beautiful old architecture of stone town.

The room and breakfast were OK, although the location is excellent and within walking distance of all the major sites and the beach :). Our double room appeared clean enough but generally felt a little old and worn out. For a budget hotel though, it was fine. (We sampled a couple of budget hotels in Stone Town, and this was definitely the best one!!)
