Great hotel in a good location. Comfortable room with good air conditioning. Central but noise wasn’t too bad. Welcoming staff and decent breakfast at the rooftop restaurant with a view above Stonetown.

We booked our hotelrooms 6 months before our visit (prepaid). But when we arrived they had ”overbooked” our rooms to someone more important.
We were very dissapointed, and they laughed at us and were very rude.
They sent us to another hotel (in a LOWER standard). And We didnt get any money back. We were fooled by this hotel.
They also promised to fix our transfer to the airport from the new hotel, but did the transfer come? NO ofcourse not because they lied all the time.

Only a Very Good because at times their internet doesn’t work so paying with a credit card can be a challenge. That said, the view from up on their roof top bar has to be the best in StoneTown. The Indian Food here is really good, as in Really Good, and they make an ok cocktail. We enjoyed some singers when there and we all were taken back by how good they were, it was like we were watching The Voice.

We are two families, 11 adults, who made a reservation at this hotel 6 months ago!! and at that time we even PRE-payed!! our rooms, 6 rooms..
So 6 months ago we made the reservation and payed for our stay, and we felt good with that.
We really liked this hotel when we where looking for somewhere to stay for our last night at Zanzibar. We where looking forward to have a nice time at the roof top bar, at the pool side and we also liked the area. How on, we decided to make the reservation at Maru Maru and we payed, as I text above, 6 months before arrival. We had our vouchers with us When we arrived Maru Maru 7 March 2018, but they just told us that they had made a new reservation for us, at another hotel, that we had to move to another hotel. If they had overbooked the hotel, how could we, who payed 6 months before, be the guests to move? In 6 months they had good time to tell us if we where the guests to be the ones who where overbooked.. In 6 months they had our money for 6 rooms! 2! days before we arrived they had made a reservation at a hotel with lower standard, and that hotel where 30 USD cheaper each room, ( I can send a pic to show the price difference, but at the moment I don't want to text the other hotels name, its not their fault ) but the manager at Maru Maru told me that the other hotel should be more expansive... But I found out at internet booking sites that it is not true, that hotel they booked for us is cheaper. ( We didn't got any money back. What they did for us was to send cars to take us to the other hotel and a guy who took us for a walk in Stone town. )
They had made that reservation 2 days before we arrived, why didn't they tried to contact us so that we could have had a choice to choose which hotel we liked to stay? And how could it be like this when we had pre payed 6 months before?
When we where upset, some of the staff where laughing. They say they where sorry, but it is not ok with this behavior and just think that an I'm sorry is enough and then laugh when they think we didn't see... If Maru Maru don't like guests who like to stay for 2 nights, one nights - Just text that on your web site!!! Text that you only like guests who stay 3 nights or more, that is much more fair!! Don't let guests become in this situation, that is not kind. When we pre payed 6 months before we could not ever dream about that they just took our money and then made a reservation at another hotel with lower standard! For Maru Maru it was ok to have our money for 6 rooms in 6 months, but not to let us stay for what we had payed for... We also had a transfer who should come to Maru Maru for pick up to the airport, we asked the Maru Maru to call our transfer to tell them about our new pick up adress and they told us to do, but in the morning the transfer went to Maru Maru for pick up and we had to start to come in contact with the transfer to tell them about the new adress.. Anyway, now when I read other recantations, I found one more guest that had to move to another hotel after one night stay of two!! What way is this to treat their guests?
We travel a lot over the world and have done sins about 15 years. Every year we do at least one long trip outside Europe and then some inside Europe, but I must tell you all here that we have never ever been out for this before.
This hotel is not fair or serious, just say - beware!!

I stayed for three nights at Maru Maru when on holiday in Zanzibar. The rooftop restaurant and bar has tremendous views, the included breakfasts were delicious and watching sunsets with very reasonably priced cocktails from the bar was a delight. The hotel is centrally located to many attractions. The room was simply appointed and comfortable. The front desk was helpful, and the two tours we booked through them were excellent. For the price, this hotel was an excellent value.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in one of the main buildings, not on the breezeway. Housekeeping was across and could be noisy at times.
