Cross street: 7th and 8th Streets
Transit: The Crimson Sparrow is located approximately 8 blocks from the Amtrak Hudson station (HUD).
Description: The Crimson Sparrow builds on Chef-Owner John McCarthy's reverence for and experience in cooking with Asian flavors utilizing French technique. The Crimson Sparrow's Tasting Menu is a foray into all of these complex, rich and unexpected flavors. It changes approximately every two to three weeks, to reflect seasonality. In addition, some of the best elements of the seasonal menu can be sampled at the bar as part of the restaurant's a la carte menu all of which have a true pact with the cellar and beverage program.

Party of 4 on Saturday night. When we got there at 730 PM - we were a bit concerned as we were the only diners other than a group of 10. However, within an hour - the outside patio was almost full. Nice outdoor space. Quiet.

Reservations a must. Dress as you like.

Service is superb.

The menu is tasting only ($95) and you can add a beverage pairing ($75). So 4 tasting menus + one chose the pairing (5 drinks). The rest ordered glasses of wine and sake as appropriate.

There were 7 or 8 courses. All small, well presented. Probably all but 1 or 2 were close to spectacular. Food is heavily Japanese influenced. Pairing is mainly sake with a few wines.

A memorable meal.

Only caveat is that pairing quantities were quite small depending on who was pouring.

Not a "value" or budget minded meal at $725 with tip.

We had a mix of tasting menu and a la Carte at our table. At $95, The tasting menu is not cheap, but for the quality provided we did not think it was overpriced. The 12 plates were small with mostly Asian flavors and some local ingredients. The mix of vegetables, meat and fish was just about right with weight given to the veggies. The kitchen technique was impressive- crisps and nests of things not normally found in those forms. Not everyone will be happy here however. While full of bright flavors , nothing was super rich. I consider this a good thing when faced with 12 courses but those looking to indulge and ignore healthy eating for an evening should go to Fish and Game at the other end of town.
The a la carte menu was also mostly Asian. Mushrooms with a fiery mustard sauce was a bold choice that really worked and tuna poke was excellent.
The wine list is interesting and reasonable. Service was personable and outstanding with the chef coming out himself
Eat in the charming garden if it is warm.

We go to The Crimson Sparrow in the Summer to dine outside looking into the symphony of goings on in the kitchen. We get the tasting menu with wine pairings and it has yet to disappoint.

We were showing off Hudson to visitors by walking to Crimson Sparrow for delicious cocktails and bar food. The four of us shared four superb appetizers, all provocative teasers for the amazing, but pricey chef's prix fixe menu that is the only option in the restaurant. A trip to the restrooms past diners is equally tantalizing.

The food was delicious. The tasting menu is well designed, but the wine pairing was weak.

Also the waitresses were confused about the process ("did they bring you wine already?"; "have you had this dish?") and constant loud&happy enquiries "how are we doing here?" With too many words of explanation after every dish... kills the romantic quiet spirit of the dinner.
The price was on par with the high end NYC.
